    Berdan primers

I just got some Tula KV762N 7.62 NATO berdan primers by mistake and would like to be able to use them- What 7.62 NATO (308) surplus ammo is available right now to stock up on?

    Thanks

Thad just check the brass buckets at the range you shoot at. Chances are if it's a brass cased .308 and in the bucket, it's Berdan primed...Ray

    Go here:
    http://www.gun-deals.com/ammo.php

Register, log in, give it your zip code, and pick 7.62x51.

Some Berdan 7.62x51 has really difficult to remove primers. Do your self a favor and get a small amount first and test, then a larger quantity.

I use a ton of those primers in 7.5x55, with spectacular results, and smaller quantities in other calibers. I have so much Boxer 7.62x51 that I've never loaded any Berdan in that caliber.

How are the anvils in the berdan cases holding up? I loaded some 8x57s and 7.62x54Rs some years back and started getting misfires with the berdan primed cases after 5+ firings because the anvills were gradually getting beat down. It might have been those specific cases though?

Is this stuff any good? Will the wolf berdan primers fit the Portuguese brass?

    PORTUGUESE NATO .308 AMMO- late 1970s / early 1980s manufacture, non-corrosive, Berdan-primed brass.

I've not had trouble with Berdan anvil erosion

My reloading with .217" Berdan primers has not caused the anvil to get shorter. I've fired 7.5X55 that number of times and can't measure any difference. I full length size, so that's as long as the cases last for me

In another of your posts you ID your 7.62X54R brass as Bulgarian. I bought a lot of the early Bulgarian because it had .217" primer pockets and came on chargers. My experience with it was that about 1 in 40 cartridges would have the primer pocket fail, venting gas into the action. For the misfires in 7.62X54R, my guess is it was the brass.

I reload some 8x57 berdan brass and have more than 8 or 10 firings per case.

Hi Guys I live in England & we simply throw away all berdan cases as it is a firm belief that they are simply unreloadably ! I have been searching for a reloading method for years, I have gone down another route from the one dicribed on this forum by "larry" I simply designed I drill that first makes a new flash hole then decap in the normal way, however I am now not able to sorce berden primers, I was given a couple of thousand by a friend from Ohio 20 years ago & have now run out & he has passed on. can any of you give me a product name or a sorce of these primer's mark

These primers are made by Murom in Russia. Some of the KV-7.62N were imported into the US about 12 years ago by PMC, and are intended for 7.62x51 class cartridges. The KV24N have only been imported by TulAmmo, and are intended for 7.62x39 class cartridges. Both are .217" diameter, but the KV-24N has less explosive, is shorter and is a lot harder. I tried using the 7.62x39 primer in full power military cartridges and got lots of hangfires and duds.

A guy who posts on a lot of Boards from Australia writes that he has recently imported large quantities of Berdan primers from RWS in Germany into Oz, in lots of different sizes.

Be advised that Berdan primers come in lots of different diameters, heights, hardnesses and explosive strengths. RWS apparently still makes many of them. I would not be surprised to find out that Murom made more than two.

Any of the west german 7.62x51 should be berdan. Hirtenberger is I believe austrian and may or may not be either boxer or berdan. Darn good brass and ammo. Stuff I have looked at was all boxer. Frank

I see that Powder Valley has both 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 berdan primers in stock. Anyone have any thoughts on the 7.62x51 primers being used in 7.62x54R and/or 8mm Mauser?

I'm using the same size as the 7.62x51 in 8MM Mauser cases.

I think the diameter is too small for most 54R, that is the case with mine any way.
