    TC contender question

I was looking at a 10 inch contender the other day. It had a funny looking muzzle with a 5 point star pattern. It was ported to reduce recoil. The whole muzzle was larger in diameter with a star pattern in the muzzle end. What is the scoop on that?

    Thanks,
    HH

Considering there are several after market barrel makers, and most any gunsmith can add a muzzlebrake to a factory barrel, it's almost impossible to say what you came across.

I think you're refering to a hot shot barrel. That "muzzle cap" (don't know the official term for it) is for when you're shooting shot shells.

I had a 45/410 barrel at one time. It had exactly what you describe. It's threaded on when shooting 410 shotshells. It has to be taken off when shooting 45 colt. I sold it years ago.

Sounds like the old Hot Shot barrels that they sold before the .45/.410 took hold. The choke tube was screwed in to fire special shot round in .357 and .44 magnum that looked a lot like the CCI shot capsules with rounded ends. I have not seen one for years at a gun show. I have a 10" Vent rib .45/.410 barrel that's great fun with shot shells.

It does look like the choke tube things. I decided against that one because it had the compensator ports. I do not want the noise and blast from that. It was listed on gunbroker.

    Thanks,

I still have one of those same barrels (10", .357 Mag) Hot Shot. As stated the barrel is ported and choked. The barrel is rifled and the choke stops the spin of the shot capsulls when firing the Hot Shot or CCI shotshells. Remove to shoot .38/.357 projos. I used mine effectively in the backyard shooting grey squrriells in Nov. The choke will keep the smaller Speer shot capsulls within 6" at 15 yds. for a nice pattern. The porting isn't much of a issue with a 10" bbl. Suggest reconsidering if interested and still availible.
