    Thumbs up New Press!

Last weekend I made a trip up to Iron Mountain, MI to pick up my new press. I had the pleasure of spending about 5 hours of time with Tim the machinist who built the press and three sets of dies for me. The press is outstanding. It is rock solid and will last for generations. I was quite impressed with his setup. He has a couple of mills with digital readouts, lathes, surface grinder and a comparator. He took the time to show me how everything works, as I am new to swaging. The dies he made for me were a core swaging die, and two paper patch bullet dies in .45 caliber. One bullet is for hunting and the other is a target bullet. I spent last week mounting it to my bench and thought I would post a picture. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out. I will post some pictures of the bullets as soon as I can.

    That is a beast.
"Consequently we move away from other shooters to remain focused on our passion, as our ideas are quickly dismissed or misunderstood by others. Sharing does not come easily for swagers, not because they are necessarily selfish, but because they have been whittling away in their only little world for so long, that being able to relate to others what they understand is no simple task."

Yes, it is a beast. It weighs 67 pounds. It would hurt if you dropped it on your foot!

    Alan,
I am glad to hear you are happy with the press and dies. It was very nice to meet you. The powder coating came out very nice, also the dies turned out excellent.

Here are a couple of pictures of some bullets swaged with the dies I got from Tim. The nice thing about swaging is that you can select the weight of the bullet and change it to any weight you want to try. The target bullet is a "Money Bullet" design and the hunting bullet is something we came up with. I can't wait to try them out!

    Hi Tim,
I just wanted to let you know that I have swaged a bunch of cores and most are within .0005. To be truthfully honest, most of the swaged cores weigh plus or minus .0002. Even the really ugly cores that I cast are looking really good. Swaging ins the way to go.

    AlaninWis,
Wow Alan you are getting the hang of it quickly. Like I told you, you can feel the pressure, if it hasn't fully bled off when you release the handle. Like I said if the handle springs up it isn't done yet. Once you get the timing down you are on your way. Hopefully we have nice weather on the way so you can shoot some results. Get some loaded up and maybe this weekend you can do some testing. I told you it was easy. The way the press cams over and locks in place also makes it easier.
    Thank You,
    U.P. North (Tim)
