What do I have?

I bought some WW from a guy who no longer cast. He had some other items that he threw into the deal.
Any idea what these are?



These he thought were elevator weights? If the bars were complete, they weigh 25lbs.


These are the thickness of construction paper.

I have no idea what Picture #1 is.

Picture #2 are Linotype ingots.

Picture #3 are typographic leads and/or rules, produced on an Elrod Strip Caster. I believe (not positive) that the alloy is Linotype.

The OP beat me to the question. I got a bunch of those containers, in Pic 1, in with some dental foils. Been wondering what they were. Thanks for the info.

Hi DistRifle,
The top pic is Soft Lead.
The Middle pic is also Soft Lead. These are Counterweights, which are Never Hard.
The Strips in the 3rd pic however are Mono/Lino, and are a good hardening alloy.

Pic number 2 looks like the lino pigs that I have gotten. To check whack it on the concrete floor. If it makes a thud sound then it is soft lead. If it rings then it is lino (or atleast has some antimony in it). You could also try hitting one of the ears with a hammer and see if it bends or breaks. If it breaks then it is hard lead, most likly lino but if it bends then it is or closer to pure.

I gave it a tap with a 3lb hammer. It has a nice ring. So, I gave it a good hit. The ear broke off. I think I have lino.

I did another test with the vise and a .172 steel ball. I put a COWW ingot, the steel ball, and the broken off ear in the vise and squeezed them together. The ball went twice as deep in the WW ingot. So, it is very hard.

Picture #1 may check out at about 9 to 11 BHN, a very usable alloy.
