    What did I get?

I went to the local scrap yard to get brass (they said they had a barrel with mostly rifle brass), it was very old, dark and messed up, probably dug out from a range. They also had some lead flashing that I started digging into to choose cleaner sheets. Well, under that there was a pile of strips of lead, they said it was printing spacers. Most of them are solid, I can bend them and at about 90 degree angle they break apart. There are some that are hollow, with round holes running trough the whole length.
There were also some odd letters that I guess are monotype.
Now, what are the spacers? Are they normally cast from monotype or is it lynotype?
Also, there were some odd looking rectangle forms.
I got them all, 87 lbs, just in case, price was $0.75.

First picture is the spacers, second the letters and the forms.

Spacers etc. are usually linotype. Other stuff is monotype. Not sure about the odd forms, never seen those.
Due to market fluctuations I am no longer buying range scrap jackets.

the lines are linotype spacers as are the line-o- type, if its more than one letter its linotype
the forms i dont know what the composition is ...

Beware those spacers are probably not lead at all! Especially if you can bend them to 90° before breaking. If in fact those spacers were either linotype or monotype, they would be so brittle that they would snap like candy bars. Many of the spacers I have encountered here in Germany are in fact probably some sort of aluminium alloy. Try holding the edge of those strips in molten lead to see if they melt at normal melt temperatures.

    Good luck and best regards,

    Adrian - Germany.

    gotin,

I just got thru using some lino spacers for the first time. I had to bend my spacers back on there selves and pinch a little to get them to snap.
I used just the spacers to see what they do.
I mixed 50/50 with pure lead. Air cooled about a week old I got 11-12 BHN.
    Casts a great boolit.

I have some of the blocks with holes like yours. I test cut them with dykes. They cut (shattered, broke, threw pieces across the room) about like the mono, so they went in the mono bucket. Haven't used any of these yet.

    You have some good alloy.

    Have a day,
    Larry
