31950 boolit in a Mosin Nagant.

I just won a Lyman 31950 mould on flebay.
I am intending on trying it out in my model 44 Mosin Nagant. This little beauty supposedly drops out at around .319. It is a semi-round nose with one groove and weighs in at a whopping 105 grains. I will be sizing it to .316 - .317 to fit the throat of my rifle.
Has anyone tried this boolit in any of their rifles?

I have not used that particular plain base boolit, but I'd imagine it would work at reasonable velocities. I'm thinking your 44 Mosin is probably 11" twist like mine so it should stabilize OK.

And you'll certainly conserve your precious supply of boolit makings.

    Try 3 - 5 gr Bullseye, should give a very accurate load at 800 - 950 fps.

    Thanks for the replies fellas.
When the mould arrives, the fun will begin. The fastest powder I have at this time is W231. I do have some Unique, Hodgdon Universal and Herco. I will give them all a try and see what develops.

I was going to bid on that mold but got sidetracked.I really like that design and was thinking of getting one made that went 150grns. Pat

    Hey Pat:
Hopefully, this boolit will shoot well. I am wanting to find something that is very accurate at 50 yards. Something that will be loaded way down to shoot flies with. Yes, flies. At the range where I shoot, I can coax flies to land on my targets with blood or small pieces of meat. Then, I let'em have it. .00003 lbs. on the hoof.

LilJackl, why shoot at the whole fly? Hit them in the head and save the meat--lol. Be sure to give us a "range report" on your round. Would like to try a few in my Mosins. Will buy a few when you get the mold going. Thanks

My freezer is to full now. Let me get the mould and cast a few to see how they "fly"

personally, I am disgusted that you would wantonly waste edible "Meat?"

Really, the ethical thing to do is to gather them up, process 'em, and offer them as a "Side Dish"

you know.... "You want Flys with that"?

A "behind the shoulder shot" doesn't waste much meat but tracking may prove difficult.

Now Larry, you know that all one has to do is follow the blood trail.

Well with that shot DRT is very "iffy" Thus when the fly "runs" after the shot the rain, snow, sleet, or just wind currents can reall make it hard to track........I gave up on shooting flys after I lost a couple in the "haze". Got me one of them electronic tennis rackets that "zaps" them. More of a challenge that way becuase it takes all this "long range" shooting non sense out of the picture....gotta sneak (AKA "hunt") up real close to 'em. Requires a sub moa swing but if I'm not "loaded" with too much coffee my "harmonics" are good enough

    That sounds very efficient Larry.
Have you mustered the courage to try it out on aggrivated wasps?

I used to shoot flies with my 75 year old Benjamin pump-up air pistol. I put a pinch of cornmeal down the barrel (wouldn't feed through the breach) and blast 'em. I quit doing it because I got tired of sweeping up corn meal around the house. I still shoot spiders with my Daisy air rifle, though, just the air blast from 6 pump-ups makes most spiders disappear. We have brown recluses in the house is why I go after spiders, shoot first, ask questions later.

    Linstrum:
That is time well spent on the brown reclusessssss.
I got one of those Benjamin pumps when I was about 10 years old. When I would run out of .22 cal. pellets, I would drop rollie- pollie bugs down the bore and give them a thrill.

Now I have have been accused of being "dumb" by some.......and.....I would have to agree given some of the things I've done over the years

But STUPID? I don't think so

    Larry Gibson

I do shoot yellow jackets "over bait" with air rifles and .22LR CBs though......at "long range"......see "dumb" but not "stupid"........

I shoot "spideys" with an air rifle also. I use an old Webley .177 with WC pellets loaded backwards. And.....yes....to all you hard cast, heavy for caliber users who complain that HPs "blow up".....in this case they do "blow up"....the spidys that is

I used to work with a fella(in the weld shop) that pastored on Sundays.
He told me that when he was a kid, him and his brother would stand next to a hornets nest with ping pong paddles and swat them as fast as they could before the buggers put them on the run. Whoever got stung first, LOST.
    Now that is faith.

I received the 31950 mould this afternoon. It looks as though it has hardly been used. It is a double cavity.
I washed it all up, preheated, and away I went. I had a block of my ww+ tin alloy ready for the pot. It got to casting temp and I started pouring.
It took a few warm up casts to get it to temp inside.
This mould likes the alloy to be pressure poured. Moulds are tempermental when they want to be.
This mould cast very good boolits. They are dropping at .319 - .320. Perfect to size down to .317. I have honed out my Lyman sizer die to match the diameter of the rifles throat.
This should be fun. It IS a cute little fellow.
I will try it out later this week.
    Jack
