    Thickness

I have been looking at buying some gas checks for a 22 caliber 22 Hornet bullet. And also a 30 caliber 180 grain bullet for my 30-06.

I have been seeing different gas checks, and different thicknesses. Normally in the past I just bought the Hornady and used them. However with the massive price increases in GC's I have been looking at a few other GC's.

It seems most brass style Hornady GC's are .012"?? I s that correct??

I saw some .009" aluminum GC's. Will these be as good and as effective as the Hornady brass GC's?? I would think that differences in thickness would make a difference?? Does it?? How about differences in GC material?? Thanks, Tom.

Hornady .30cal checks are made from 17 thou gilding metal. .22 checks are 10 thou.

For home made I like 8-10 thou for .22 and 12-14 thou for .30cal. 16 thou for .30 Brit.

GC thickness required also depends on boolit shank dia and sizing dia to suit particular barrel. Alloy composition of boolit can also have an effect.

I agree with Jeff on home made 30 cal thickness.I use .014 from .309 to .314 dia,but much over .314 they are too small.I am lucky enough not to own a .303 so i dont need 8mm gas checks(kidding Jeff,i see how well you have gotten yours to shoot especially your Pygmy)

A GC shank of about .285 is average for most 30's.

Jeff, Are you using .016 in the .303 with Charlie's tool? Bullets have a .284 shank? Thanks James

James, for my .303 Brit checks I have to use a 2 ply system to get 16 thou. 12 litho plate outer and a 4 thou soda can wall inner. Works great but single ply would be better. I have found that alum. aerosol cans are 16 thou in the side wall so I grab all I can now.

Shanks are .284 for Lyman however my CBE .303 bullet shanks can be .290 as Jim cuts them bigger for the stout military grooves.
