    Range lead

I just got back from a camping trip. The place I camp at has a little pistol/shotgun/muzzleloader range only. It is never that busy. well I looked at the berm in the back and they just dug it up or tilled it or something. But there were hundreds and hundreds bullets just laying there. I'm too old and two spine surgeries from picking it up. Broke my heart.

I was thinking about getting a sand flea rake to gather lead. I feel your pain, I have 9 vertebrae that are fused together.

Get a long (14") pair of needle nose pliers. It's the last foot of bending that kills my back. That will also improve your eye hand coordination.

I think some type of hand rake might work, short handle but long enough so you don't have to bend at that odd angle for your back. 3' long would do it like that sand flea rake handle.

Unfortunately here in Ohio our soil is mostly thick, heavy clay. We get clods and chunks and from my experience the only way to screen it would require water and panning to dissolve the soil.

I get about 30-40 pounds an hour just picking up the loose bullets on the berm, no digging. Wear old clothing, knee pads, fingerless gloves, and be prepared to get muddy.
Due to market fluctuations I am no longer buying range scrap jackets.

When I go re-claiming I just bring several 5 gal buckets and sit for a while.
It sure beats going up and down.

I cut the bottom out of a 3.5 gal soap bucket and put some hail screen in it place 1/4" and went to the range and got 200# in 45 minutes.

I WISH we had it so good. You must have some sandy dry soil... here in Ohio we have thick chunky mud the consistency of drywall paste and it dries into clumps like cement. You can't screen that! It'd be like trying to screen the corn out of a turd.

Nice analogy, sounds like the soil at my range.

I just clean out the obvious junk, rocks, etc and melt the rest. Once you remove the jackets then the crud floats to the top and can be removed. More work than WW but it is free!
