Anyone tried Lyman's 429667 design?

I have been thinking about getting a 4-cavity of this design to use as plinker in 44 Spec/44 Mag sixguns and a Marlin 1894SS. I was curious if anyone had any reports on it they could share.

This boolit feeds real well in both the Marlin and Winnie .44 mags that I've had. It also is a good boolit for the 329PD, because it's ogive precludes boolit jump thru the throats. Only drawback to this boolit is that it is not a "good paper puncher". The lack of a front driving band causes it to tear holes in targets instead of punching nice .44 holes like 429421 and others with FDB's. If I were you, I'd go for the 4 cav version. I wish my 2C were a 4C!--Shuz

I actually have ordered a 4-cavity version. I realize this design is not going to cut nice clean WC type holes in paper. I am most concerned about feeding and accuracy. I am trying to find a design that will give good accuracy in both my sixguns and leverguns and that will feed properly in the leverguns. I also want a decent meplat on it so that I can take deer cleanly if the opportunity presents itself.

What kind of accuracy did you experience?

Accuracy was OK, by that I mean it was nuthin to brag about, like some of the less than 1" at 25 yds I've obtained down thru the years with 429421 or 429650. However, as I recall, 5 shot groups from various revolters gave less than 3" groups at 25 and about the same at 100 yds from my Winnie trapper. A good combo rifle/pistol load for this boolit I've found is 10g of Unique. 4 to 5" bbls give about 1050fps and the Winnie gives close to 1250 with this load. Good enuf for deer in my estimation.

I bought this mold specifically for my Marlin 1894 44, hoping it would feed better than the Keith style bullets. Works some better, but not as good as hoped for. Loaded in 44 mag cases, it feeds properly maybe half the time, with misfeeds catching on the meplat. However, if I back the lever off on a misfeed and try to rechamber, it usually always goes in. So it's usable but a pain.

In regards to it hanging on the meplat, coule it be that you are seeing a cartridge OAL problem? How long was the 429667 when loaded in 44 Mag brass? Was it 1.600"? Or longer?

I have seen some Marlins that were real picky regarding OAL. How large is the meplat? Is it larger than say the 429421?

The COL is 1.630". This is with 44 mag case at std trim-to-length of 1.275" and bullet seated in the crimp groove. It's seated at the very top of the crimp groove. The only way to make COL shorter and still use the groove is to trim back the case.

Meplat is 0.27"

That bullet feeds well and I've sold alot to Cowboy action shooters, the only problem is if you need a bullet bigger then .430, like say .432", this one won't do it.

the 667 has been around for quite a while now.
the mid-late 90's at least.
the last one I bought made 428 with my alloy, so I took a few day's and fixed it, it makes 430+ now.

It's one of my Lyman molds and it produces a good boolit. I use it in 44 Magnum and 44 Special and it's as accurate as any SWC boolits I cast. You won't know that until you actually try it, but the chances of success for you I'd say are quite high with good castings, appropriate powder and etc.

Lyman's 429667 RNFP boolet is what I used to take my last Michigan whitetail with my 1894 SS. With my relatively soft alloy, my boolets drop at .431 and weigh close to 250 grains. Load was 10 grains of Unique. Deer traveled 50 yards, after being shot through both lungs. Range was 15 yards, I was in a treestand, on the edge of a harvested beanfield. I crimp in the crimp groove and have no issues with cycling. However, out of the box, my Marlin feeds SWC's. The only feeding issues I've had, is with 300 grain LFN boolets.

This Lyman boolet also works well in my Redhawk. During load development for the Marlin, I found that Unique gave me better accuracy than the 2400, I prefer in 44 Magnum. Rather than waste lead, I shot the remainder of test loadings in the RH. At 25 yards, accuracy was as good as the RCBS 240 SWCGC boolet.

To check for feeding in the rifle I would get some before getting a mold. Montana Bullet Works has them. Someone here might also send you a few to try. Rifles can be fussy. IME, the truncated cone bullets will feed in almost all rifles with no problem. They feed effortlessly in my Rossi M92 rifles.
