    Wheel weight days are numbered

I just sorted two boxes of ww's which were given to me by a friend who works at an auto dealership. About 20 percent were iron or zinc. Mostly zinc. Six months ago he also gave me some ww's and only a few were zinc. This is from a town in rural Florida. Florida does not require zinc ww's but I guess everyone is switching over. We beat stock up now.

According to my wheel weight guy at the tire shop think he said as of June 2011, and I don't remember the exact date if there was one, there will be no more lead ww's made. That is according to his wheel weight supplier. Guess we better sneak down to one of the casinos after dark and rob a few off of the 18 wheelers settin in the parking lot. (just kiddin)

the good news is they will be pulling lead wheel weights off for another couple of years though in california it is against the law to use lead ww's so they must pull off the old ones when re balancing or balancing new tires

I wonder if the dealers will be required to send the lead ww's to a 'government recycler'?

Supposedly that is the ruling here in Kommifornia. It's to be treated as Haz mat'l. Pure BS, but true or not, that is what most tire guys are going by. No one wants the big state fine for not following the Nazi EPA rulings. Yes, get it where you can & stack it deep, two years tops & it's all but gone (avg life of tires).

Yeah, I went to a Firestone Tire shop day before yesterday that told me they'd love to give me wheel weights but the EPA classifies it "Hazmat", so no dice. I tried explaining that the lead itself isn't hazmat, but they wouldn't budge. Out of 10 shops I went to, none would give or sell WW's. One place said they would sell me some, but they had just been wiped out by another caster.

Probably what their corporate office told 'em.
Ask 'em if they pay a Hazmat fee when they get their shipment.
Not that it will do any good, but might get 'em thinkin'.

Dang agencies, wouldn't put it past 'em to say that.

I suspect that, in ten years, people will be talking about something called wheel weights that the old time casters used to smelt and use. I also suspect that Rotometals will be selling a lot more lead, tin and antimony. IF they're allowed to sell lead.

If it comes to it, remember, as long as there are plumbers, there will be lead in plumbing supply houses. You might need to make friends with a plumber that works for a contractor to buy it for you, but plumbers still use lead and will continue to need it. Contrary to popular belief, there are applications in plumbing that will always require lead.

If lead is outlawed for all but commercial/industrial use, I can't help but wonder how that is going to affect the fishing sport. There's a lot of lead used in that.

Plumbers and sheetmetal workers...like me. We use pure lead for flashng on the tile roof, as well as 50/50 bar solder for soldering everything.

And using acid to ID zinc. well we use acid to clean galvinized, off so we can solder it on standerd roof flashings. Galvinzied is just zinc coating, kinada.

It is a wonder that no sheetmetal worker put it togeather before to use acid to test for zinc.

Hmmm, wonder if our local indoor range would let me "harvest" their backstop area. About 25 feet long x 18" wide channel to collect lead. Its about 3-4" thick in there. Mainly 22's over about 20 years. Don't know how you would get it out though, and would have to disassemble/reassemble the backstop. I helped rebuild it, so I know what a pain it would be.

Definitely be more that a one man job (or two or three man too).

I'd still take the WW's even if zinc, you can sell them to a scrap yard and then buy what you need.

I got a bucket today again, and only 40% was lead. I will collect while it still is some lead in the bucket. I do clean the indoor range and have feed my 38, 40 and 45 with that since i startet casting. Lead is my gold.

WW dried up around here years ago. I've been living off indoor range scrap for a long time. I feel sorry for the guys just starting the game. I'm moving on 54 now and believe I have pretty close to a lifetime supply, but there are tough times coming...

Take a look in the fishing section next time you're at Wal-Mart. About 30% of the sinkers are either marked "green" or "eco-friendly". Probably zinc or steel.

Not really, w/ many locals banning galv & copper piping, PEX is now the plumbers chice for most residential work nowdays. No, I suspect plumbing lead & sweated copper joints will also be going byebye sooner than later, at least for future construction. The lead ww are going to be gone insde two years, the average life of a set of tires.
