30 carbine

im new to casting. i have a lee 200 gr swc in 45 that im not impressed with. now i want to start casting for 30 carbine and would like to get your opinions on which mold to buy. and if i should use gas checks or water quench and bake i use ww to cast i haven't started experimenting with lead and tin.

I use Lyman's 311359, 311316 and 313631 in my M1 Carbines. I have used 311410 but it is a plain based bullet and I could not get any where the accuracy at full .30 Carbine velocities that I do with the GC'd bullets. I also have used he Lee C309-120-R with very good success.

I load the above GC'd cast bullets to 1850 - 1950 fps (depending on bullet weight) using H110. I've tried other powders but H110 (the original .30 Carbine powder) works very well with all the bullets. I cast the bullets out of WW + 2% tin an AC them. I seat Hornady GCs and size them to .309 (some chambers won't take .310 or larger bullets with some cases) and lube them with Javelina. My coyote load with the 313631 HP'd with a Forster tool runs 1950 fps and I have put 15 shots into 3" at 100 yards numerous times when my eyes were younger. It is deadly on coyotes too

I have a H&G 4 cavity #250 113 gr rn gc 30 cal bullet mould that is virtutally new. I hate to admit it but I have never used it. I had visions of buying an old model (3 screw) Ruger Blackhawk and working up a gas checked load for it. I just never got around to it.
I have a number of those kinds of H&G moulds. Great caliber, great bullet, but no gun for it.......just yet.

I have been using the RCBS 120 grain roundnose/GC with 14 grains IMR 4227 and the H&G #254 4cav. Both work well in the Ruger as well, but the 4227 load is a bit blasty. Alternate load for the ruger is 5 grains of Unique. Also accurate and quieter. A slight taper crimp is neccessary as is careful attention to uniform case length. LLS

I am using a Lee C309-120-R with ACWW's placed on top of 12gr IMR4227. The boolit is a GC design but I am not using any. This load does not lead my carbine and I am consistantly busting clay pigions (on berm) at 25 yards (have not shot it past this). One of these days I will get serious about the accuracy but its just to dang fun to shoot.

As for no leading, either my mold is dropping the right size boolit or the barrel is shot out (its a Winchester with a 58XXXXX serial number)

No, but you will need a Lee.309 push hrough sizer. It will "install" the GCs. It also comes with a bottle of LLA so you can also lube the bullets. Suggest you heat up the LLA by placing the bottle in soe hot water in a sink or pan for 5 minutes or so. That reall thins it out for a god lube if you use it per the instructions right away. With the Carbine bulles I suggest a double lube and then thumb push on the GC and push through the sizer. That will keep the load ammo and seating dies a little less messy. The lube grooves will have enough lube in them.

thanks i think thats the route im going to go i use 50/50 mix of LLA and past wax i pop it in microwave for a few sec to heat up

You really don't need a GC'd bullet in either the .30 M1 Carbine of the Ruger Blackhawk .30 Carbine. I've shot thousands of PB bullets in each without problems.

Why go to the added expense of the GC?/beagle

+1 - I use that boolit with my Carbine, but use the GC, and seat it in a lube/sizer. Haven't been able to beat the acceptable accuracy with any other bullet, cast or condom.

PB is a plain base bullet. You don't need a GC with either the carbine or Ruger. My favorite for both applications is a 311008HP with the nose bumped round for positive feeding.

Larry is right about the GC with a hot load. The PB needs to be kept below 1600fps if using WW. I get my best results with the obsolete lee 309-130r gc and 12gr 2400.

The Lee 309-130 mold has been a good one in my.30 M1 Carbine barreled Contender. It cast about 136 gr. and with GC and lube run 140 gr. That all changed when I got a new 30-140 FN GC mold from LBT. I called Accurate Powder for some loading data and was told 10 gr up to 11.4 gr. of 5744 max. As far as the 311410 goes,I've had good luck with H110 and A#9 powder up near max. Remember that this is a 10" Contender
Last winter,I went to visit my daughter in Montacello,Arkansas. In a local gunshop,I found another Lee 309-130 mold and picked it up.
