    311284 twist question

    Hi guys,
    I receintly bougth a Lyman 311284 mold.
I wonder, will the boolit be useful in a barrel with a 1/9.45 twist? I'm considering the weight?
I already use a Lee C312-185-1R with some good results.

I believe that bullet was designed with the 30-40 Krag with its 1-10" twist.

When it comes to twist, cast bullet play by different rules. Lead being heavier that guilding metal/core, they have a shorter length and different center of mass. 211281 was designed for a 1-10 twist and is still very accurate in a 1-12. You should have no problems in your barrel.

That's a great boolit. If I could only have one that's it. They've been shot successfully in everything from a 7.62x39 to a .300 Mag. Makes a M94 Winchester into a humdinger deer gun, a real BOWM.(Bench or Woods Marshall). With that quicker twist you may have velocity limits that wouldn't apply to a 1/12".

    dualsport,

Tell me more about .300 Mag. please, The boolit is to long for the case neck and maybe will not enter in the rifle magazine

You got me. I made that up. I have read about and used the 311284 in many different cartridges but have no first hand experience with the .300 Win. Mag. It is too long for the necks of many .30s, including the long necked 30-30, but still makes a dandy load. I don't recall using my magazine with any cb loads other than a .357 carbine and a Win. 94. Usually I single load and seat my boolits way out, all either bench rest shooting or matches where single loading is not a problem. I also shoot a lot of single shots. When funds allow I'm going to convert my M700 7mm mag. to .300 Win. Mag. and then I'll see for real. When I do I probably won't use the magazine when shooting cbs. If my memory serves the difference between a .308 Win. neck and a .300 mag. neck is about 15 one hundredths of an inch or less. I'll find a way to deal with it.
