Need someone to run a Quick Load program for me .38spl 160 swc VV N340

The bullet is a Rim Rock 158gr swc. Length is .693, nose to crimp is .324. I would like to run it with 6.0, 6.3 and 6.7 of VV N340 with a standard spp.
    I really would appreciate it.............

I just wrote a long response, it's all been deleted, sigh....

All loads were between about 21-30k, depending on case capacity used and comparing between Quickload & Gordon's Reloading Tool. +P pressure is 20k, standard pressure is about 17k.

    Edit:

Gordon's Reloading Tool is free & is very similar to Quickload, both programs have some advantages over the other but I'd recommend any reloader install it. Quickload case capacity for 38 Special is 23.1gr, GRT says 24.9gr. Wikipedia says 23.4. I'll use 23.4 for any data below:

    4" barrel, 1.474 OAL, 23.4gr case capacity:

    QL:
    6gr 24.8k 991fps
    6.3gr 27.5k 1028fps
    6.6gr 30.3k 1064fps

    5gr 17k 858fps
    5.5gr 20.7k 926fps

    GRT:
    6gr 22.9k 973fps
    6.3gr 25.3k 1011fps
    6.6gr 27.9k 1047fps

    5gr 15.9k 837fps
    5.7gr 20.6k 933fps

Obviously true case capacity will change matters, I've never measured their capacity. QL had 23.1, GRT 24.9, that's a big difference. All numbers I gave above, I used 23.4 based off of Wikipedia. If you want different numbers based off of different capacity, OAL, etc let me know.

    I just checked load data for N340 with 158gr @ 1.476" OAL: max load 5.7gr 967fps

Thank you for running this simulation for me, I really appreciate it. This is a surprise to me. VV in their online loading data shows from 5.8 to 6.8gr under various 158 to 160gr bullets. I really thought N340 might be the wrinkle. Thanx again..............

I just put in QL some of the VV load data with a few of the 158gr bullets, starting load pressures were around 19-22k, max loads 23-25k. So both of these programs may be exaggerating N340 pressures a bit, and/or book data may be a bit hotter than SAAMI spec. I could believe both, none of this is an exact science. But based on the fact that QL is claiming similar pressures on VV data as what I gave you for your 6-6.6gr loads, I suspect you'd be ok in the low 6gr range. Your bullet is also on the long side for a 158gr, many of them are more in the .64-.66 range. Just going from a .64 to a .69 bullet, with OAL remaining the same, bumped a load from 21k to 24k

Some older Vihta Vuori data at 21K

I think this is CIP used in Europe..........

But the newer data in the new on-line load manual is a good bit hotter.........

Only data that I noticed online with 158gr to compare to your print data is Speer HP. Online it lists a max of 5.6gr vs your print max of 5.9gr.

There are so many variables to consider, I see plenty of people using loads that these simulation programs would consider decently over max pressure. And I think these programs are generally super useful & not far off. But again lots of variables from case capacity to chamber etc etc. I'd still stick with the idea that staying in maybe the 6-6.2gr range will give you similar max pressures to their max loads

    The Vihta Vuori Pistol and Handgun on line data lists the following;

    158gr Flat Point LOS COL 1.547" N340 start 6.0gr 925fps, max 6.7gr 1079fps

    158gr Berry's Flat Point COL 1.535" N340 start 6.0gr 948fps, max 6.8gr 1089fps

The other '5' 158 to 160gr bullets max out at 5.8gr to 6.0gr but they have shorter OAL

I have also seen 6.3 listed on an on-line loading site but you know how that goes......

They also list 5.8 and 5.9gr N340 with 180gr bullets.

    Thanx for your help..........

Larry Gibson tested loads for me in his 7.9" Contender with pressure trace.

    N340, 158gr Rim Rock swcbb, Rem 1 1/2, oal 1.500,

    6.0, 1109fps, sd 16, es 51, 21,900psi
    6.3, 1159fps, sd 15, es 44, 23,200psi
    6.5, 1191fps, sd 12, es 33, 26,000psi

    The Gordons was very close...........

ddixie.. Was wondering if you have run those loads through a standard 4" barrel revolver...would be interested in knowing what they are running...

No Bob, I haven't chronoed them. I have fired some thru my 15-3 and an lcr. They give a good report and slam a 1/2 size steel target with a satisfying thump and I am pleased with them. I have shot a good bit of the 6.0 and have loaded some 6.2 for future heavy lifting.
