The web address will bring his on line catalog up. Further contact info is on the site. He will work with you for a truely custom mold for yourself if that is what you decide you want. Mention my site name and be prepared for sailor language.Robert

That Lee boolit is very accurate in my 338 Win Mag with 39 grains of 3031.
One might try a ratio by volume, drop down some from that and work back up as pressures allow.

As I remember my velocities are in the range you are seeking.

I have been trying to get a RCBS 200 grain Flat Point 338 boolit to perform as well as the Lee 220 gr. RN to hunt with and none have come close. I do admit that I have yet to spend as much time as I did to find the 3031 load.

For what it is worth I don't think I have ever done load development in 5 and 10 grain increments.

I'm not too keen on Accurate's claim of DP-74 being 3% slower than AA2520. My experience has demonstrated that DP-74 produces slightly more velocity than equal charges of AA2520 in both the 30-30 and 35R and I'm talking about charges that get both rounds going 2000 fps or better.

i purchased 48lbs of this powder when Powder Valley sold it a few years back for $69.00 a keg. just getting around to working with it . i still have an ample supply of 2520 still. when bought it stated on the Accurate web site that you had to bump up charges by 3 percent to duplicate 2520 loads. thanks for the heads up as my next range outing i will be chrongraphing thes next Data-74 rounds.

    Hi Guys,
I hope this is helpful. Today I shot my first cast boolit loads from my TC Encore 338 A Sq. I used the Lee boolit, unsized, lubed with Lee Alox, 10gr of Unique, WLR primer, Weatherby cases. The results were a 3 shot group, one hole .48 wide. I think I'm onto something, '

It's becoming apparent to me that the .338-06 has been a well kept secret!

But threads like this one are "letting the cat out of the bag!"

    VIVA the .338-06!

I was about to ask if the bore was clean of copper or anything else, you may have answered that question with the 2nd try of Unique. I use Unique for most of my 338/06 shooting now as well as 4320 and 2520. You are on the right road accuracy wise with the new homemade sizer. If I can suggest a mold maker for the .338 cal., try BRP at babrandt@sbcglobal.net. He makes a 230 gr. .338 that I really have grown fond of. He`ll send a sample of them if you contact him.Robert

It was a funny sort of turn of events ........ I'd just bought a slightly used ER Shaw .338-06 on the savageshooters.com site from a member for a Savage 110 and the mere mention of it here and all of a sudden I find there are whole bunch of devotes of that chambering lurking around on Boolits!

And out of the BLUE jumps Hardcast!!!! LOL!

We had done a bunch of messaging on the .416 Taylor and my looking for a barrel ...... but not even a hint about the .338-06!

The idea of a path to a Lee Collet die adapted to this grand caliber suits me no end ....... Lee should "just do the right thing" and make it!

And just today ....... I received a package from an "unknown" source ..... from a far away place ........ (actually, HCTaylor asked me if I'd be interested in another care package ..... but I'd forgotten ....... CRS you know!)

So here I am standing in front of my mail box ....... hoping that 'ole Bin Laden had not gotten me in his cross hairs ..... and it dawned on me that BRP was a boolit mold maker!

So in my less guarded condition I opened the "strange" package ....... and found some REAL SWEET boolit samples!!!

As I am less enthused about the Lee boolit with it's SKINNY lube grooves ...... the BRP specimen ....... has a GENEROUS groove!

As good as the Lee boolit works ....... I can hardly imagine just how the better designed BRP slug will work!

IN SHORT ........ I LIKE IT!!!

    KUDOS TO BRP!!!

(Kudos to Hardcast416Taylor as well even though he tries to hide his good deeds from the public eye ...... LOL!!)

    They are both real "keepers"!!

Three44s can you post a photo of that bullet. as like you you i am also not to thrilled with the small lube grooves on the Lee bullet. using Alox it works ok but is messey to apply. also is that a gas check design?

    Rick,

Posting pictures ...... me? Hope you're patient ....... LOL!!

The easy part ..... yes, it's a GC design and at least to me with a novel twist .... it has an oversized portion right at the rear junction of the gas check shank and then necks down just in front of it. This I am told helps lock the check on more tightly.

The boolit is not a bore ride either. A generous lube groove and a long full diameter section ahead of the groove and then breaking at the ogive to a medium sized flat nose.

A rather FINE design by my eye. As much as the Lee boolit works well for it's perceived flaws ....... this boolit should be GRAND!!!

I guess I could take some pictures and e-mail them to you and you could post them for everyone?

    Best regards

Rick459, I already gave the e-mail of BRP maker Bruce Brandt. Another address for him that should bring up his on line catalog is as follows. BRP.Castpics.net On the second page of rifle molds will be the 342-230 .338 bullets we are talking about.Robert

I finally got around to trying the Lee 220gr in my 338-06. My bore slugged at .339 so I had to make a .340 sizing die. So my boolits are sized at .340 using Carnuba Red lube. I used Rick's 2520 data as a start. I have to fiddle around a bit more but I think the 2520 powder will work pretty well.

ok so here is a update.here are photo's of a target that i shot today at 100 yds using the Lee 220 grn. bullet and 40 grns. of Data 74 powder which is supposed to be like 2520 but you have to up the charge by 3 percent so until i chrnograph these i won't know for sure if that is correct. there are five shots in the bull although it is hard to tell in these photos. i used Lee Alox lube on the bullets.

I was offered the pleasure of shooting Rick's "John Deere Tractor Axel" .338-06 and can attest to it being an absolute joy to shoot!
Now, more than ever, I want a big heavy bull barrel for one of my 30-06's.
The pictures just don't do it justice, IMHO.

Been shooting cast in my 338-06 since 1995. I have a preprison 250gr wfn from Veral Smith made to my and my gunsmiths specifications from a chamber casting ala Veral. I need to get back to playing with it again. It took a doe mule deer back in 98 or so. And with 225 gr barnes X it took the buck in my avitar and with 217 gr swift a frame it took a 338 inch Nevada bull elk. This caliber is a elk whacking sob! I have now settled on barnes 185 gr triple shocks at 2900 fps. I really love this cartridge!
