    Interesting mold received today

I have never been a huge fan of the Louverin style boolits. For what ever reason, (maybe because I shoot mostly modern rifles and few older military rifles?), I have always had more success with other designs. I've tried a number of them from 22 up to 30 caliber, and some shot well, but never as good as others for me. Maybe just my loads or technique, I dunno. But when I read beagle's article on Castpics about the RCBS 30 SP molds, it piqued my interest. He compared the older RCBS designs to Louverin's, and they do look similar. I decided I would look for some of the 30 molds to try. Not long ago I bought a 30-180-SP of the older style on here from no.1.

Then the other day I bought a 28-168-FN RCBS mold thinking I would try it as a heavier boolit in my 7-30 waters contender or 7-08. This is the mold I received. It immediately reminded me of beagle's article and the Louverin comparison. I've begun to call them semi-Louverin's. The left mold is the 30-180-SP mold I got from no1, on the right is the 28-168-FN I just received. It came in one of the old RCBS green and white cardboard boxes. Anybody know if RCBS made any other of these "Semi-Louverin" designs? Just curious. Thanks, Billy

But are the dimensions simular to a true Loverin? The bands on the real McCoys would have a taper IIRC....

Wow! Lots different than my 28-168FN. I've never seen a Louverin design that didn't shoot good if it fit. I think of them as groove riders. Wonderful support and plenty of lube option. I love 'em. Those RCBS moulds are sort of an offshoot of the idea, I agree.

Ran some test casts of the 7mm mold yesterday too. Had the melt a bit hot for it I think. Ran it up for some 22's and the other mold I was trying, and didn't cool it down any. Had some slight finning at the base and some whiskering. Will have to try again later. Boolits came out right at 173 gr. and a little smaller than I had hoped at .285 approx. Hoping for a slightly bit bigger boolit, but will try again. No discernable taper to the boolit either. Top band is the same size as the bottom.

.............I think that may be RCBS's old 7mm design. Thier current 7mm-168 is a 'for sure' bore rider. That'd be a REAL Loverin if each of those drive bands had a lube groove in the middle of'em

    Billy--

I see what ya mean by "semi-Loverin".

I've had practically zero time with Loverin-type designs until very recently. Samples in 6.5mm from friends here for test-driving my Ruger 77R in 6.5 x 55 did quite well, particularly #266469. That one is still allegedly in production, and is on the Short List for acquisition.

I like that look of the 'semi loverin'.

I may have to look into getting one like that for my 7mm.

....................Kinda like the 8mm Lee single cavity group buy I did several years ago:

236 - 240grs depending on alloy. The one on the right had been squirted up through a Lee .314" die

    Hey Billy.
I used that long RCBS 7mm in a 28 Long Neck (30-06 brass full length sized in a 7-08 die and trimmed to conformity). Worked good as long as I could keep it from gas cutting before it got into the rifling.

What's a 28 long neck? You leave the case at 30-06 length after running through the 7-08 die? What purpose would that long of a neck serve? Just curious, learn something new every day.

Buckshot- I was lucky enough to snag one of those 8mm molds off the classifieds not long ago. it does kinda have the sme look to it. Hope to try it out here soon.

Al- oddly enough my first Loverin success came recently as well, in a 6.5x55. But it was a new Tikka of a friends. I acquired a 266454 not long ago, and hung on to it to test in his gun. So far it has done very well.

    Thanks, Billy

I asked RCBS and here is what they said...

It uses top punch number 530 - part number 85530 which is now obsolete and no longer available. Thanks for choosing RCBS and have a great day!
