Thanks JIMinPHX. Thats fantastic, just what I needed.

Yup Trail Boss in the 222 is like shooting a 22lr or 22mag great fun also makes for a nice soft shooing load in the 45--70
Another THANK YOU here, for posting that article series. Got some reading to do after the ball game tonight.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.
For my 45-70 cast i find 4759 excellent.i use 23 g with 350 g Ranch Dog 1190 fps out of 22 in barrel.Ruger No 1. Trying 10 g of Universal . FPS about 950?
Unique would be my suggestion for both.
If Unique is hard to get, I am not sure what ADI powder would be good.

The Second there to protect the First!
See how I go in the morning, weather pemitting.
Boolit cast from Lyman 225415 mold. 9.5, 10.0, 10.5 grains of Alliant 2400. Remington cases. Federal Match SM Rifle primers.
Seated pretty deep but I wanted to protect the lub groove and the first one is just insdie the neck and the gas check is just above the base of the neck.
Happy Days.
Well it was windy as for testing loads but got results anyway.
9.5 gn was rubbish, scattered all over the place with one bullet not even hitting the target.
10.0 gn was no better.
And then 10.5 came in great and with further development, I'm sure can only get better. :boogie:
I could not believe that 0.5 gn could make so much differance.
The first 3 shots went 0.9 moa and then the next 2 pushed it out to 2.2 moa. All shots were only at 50m due to the wind but once I get a still day I will take it out to 100m. Still only a freckle over an inch at 50m, that's minute of rabbit.
I know Lyman lists 11.0gn as the starting load for 223 rem so I will go up some more with the 222. I'm want to keep the pace down so as to not get leading and also not punch holes in my metalic targets. Pressure still looks fine at least from the primmers and cases.
I was using 14gr. of 2400 and a 250gr. "45 Long Colt" boolit from Lyman, Shooting them right out of the mold.
joel0407 :
If you're really looking for accuracy, forget about how many lube rings are outside the case neck. Seat the bullet only deep enough to allow the bolt to close smoothly. If the ogive of the bullet is lightly engraved when the bolt is fully closed, all the better !
Keep us posted.

AP70-N is ADI's equivalent to Unique. Here's their chart: http://www.adi-powders.com.au/handlo...quivalents.asp
[QUOTE=joel0407;1000599]I'm interested to know others thoughts and starting loads. Considering we cant get all the powders that you can in the US, here in Australia.
I have just today purchased a Tikka T3 Stainless Lite in 222
I already use ADI AR2207 (Hodgson H4198 Equilivant) in my 45/70 and will use for Jacketed in my new 222.
I purchased 100 rounds of factory Remington ammo to run the barrel in then I plan to purchase a 225415 Lyman mould.
I was going to us Unique for my reduced cast loads in both cartriges. After some reading I am now considering 2400, if I can buy it here.
I'm all ears.
I use 24grns of 2400 in a 425grn cast beer tooth boolit no recoil and does the job on deer and thin skinned game. I also use winchester primmer
My experience with both the .223 (close) .22 Hornet, and 45-70 is that Unque is best for the velocities you are seeking. I would use 2400 for the next tier of velocity range (above 1600 perhaps in the .222, or 1400 (with the lighter boolets I have used) in the 45-70, and something slower for velocities approaching jacketed speeds. I haven't tried a .222 yet although I would like one, and did look at a CZ 527that was used yesterday.
I find 10 g Unique(Universal) with a 350 g bullet has no recoil and is very accurate,

Go with Trail Boss with no worry about double charges, low recoil and can be used with any weight 45-70 slug.
For 45-70 try 22.0 grains for SR4759 with a 405 grain cast bullet (about 1100 fps). You can work up from there. I find I get about +50 FPS for every grain. (this is in my gun). The SR4759 load data can be found in the LYMAN 49. This was the trail boss for rifles before there was trail boss. I shoot alot of 4759 for CBS at reduced velocities in alot of calibers. My 2 cents. thanks rc
I am getting great results with 4759 in 222, 223, and 6mm Rem. I prefer 5744 in my 444 so would imagine it will work well in the 45-70. My velocities in the 222 and 223 are about 2100 fps and I once deliberately put a double charge in the 222 and 223 just to see what it looked like. Can't miss it if you shine a flashlight into the case.
