That is a good idea...

What I've typically done with stuck cartridges, is put the barrel in the air with the stock on the ground... with the foregrip against my shoulder. Put one hand on the fas side of the charge handle, and with a soft brass malet, tap the other side of the charge handle down towards the ground... this gives me pretty good control on how hard and fast the bolt comes back...

The edges of my bench are padded, so I don't know how well that would work... not exactly a rigid corner to hook against...

I'm surprised "INTEL6" hasn't checked in. Looked like he had some really long cast bullets sticking out of those Socom cases in his picture.

I'm off to the bench. I have 50 empties out there waiting for me and that 37.5GR. of H-4198 was looking pretty good for the Hornady 350's. yesterday.

While I'm at it, I think I'll drag out the burn charts and see how close lil'Gun is to some of my other powders.

not sure about that bullet, but I shoot a 405 grain pointed GC over 25-27 gr. of Lil'Gun. my other favorite loads are the lee 500 grain RNGC over 26 gr. of IMR 4198, and the Lyman 385 grain FNGC over 29 gr. IMR 4198. all of these loads shoot to pretty much the same POI at 200 meters and cycle the rifle reliably.

I understand that the US Coast Guard uses the 458SOCOM round for drug interdiction missions. They like having a rifle that will shoot through the side of a boat and still do a lot of damage. Can't actually document this, just read it in a couple of gun rags.

It's a beast for sure. My 320gr. cast boolits only chrony 1,450, but what's the muzzle velocity of a brick....

I have a hundred new cases on my bench ready to be filled and thirty-some PC'S Lee 340's and a box of 405's ready to top them. The plan is that this evening I'll get some of this done.

I've been a bit disappointed with the accuracy with the hotter loads and my range time has been so short that I haven't shot it over a Chrono yet. It's good to hear from those of you who have had some success. I'll drop into the 14-1500 fps range and hope for the best.

I powder coat, so that seems not only to keep things cleaner, I think it lets me get a little more velocity with acceptable accuracy.

cost effective are they?

Jack, I'm hoping to achieve some of accuracy that you show in the pictures above.

There is an entire sub forum called Coatings and Alternatives dedicated to among other things, powder coating. I've been at it for a year or so now and have been able to do some testing. No leading, although that hasn't been a problem for me in many years. Reduced smoke since there is no wax to burn. Cost effective, if I do the analysis I wonder some days if I should even be reloading to begin with. I'll burn 1-2000 pistol rounds per month in the summer and if I think about my what my time is worth at work it's a no-brainer. But then there is the SOCOM at $5.00 per round.

This time around I'm coating the Lyman 457122. It's a 330 Gould bullet that is Hp's. I've been PC'ing with Harbor Freight. PM me some contact info and I'll send you a few to try if you're interested.

Accuracy with these cast bullets (Lee 457-340 thus far) seems much more velocity sensitive than my experiences with 30 cal. With 30 cal's, 7.62x40 and 7.62x39, I'd pretty much coat and treat it like jacketed. I felt like a rock star. With the Socom it's a different story. I guess I just need to devote a couple range trips to it until I get on top. The ladders run backwards and I still need to keep going down, I guess....

Thank you for your offer, but I had the LEE 457-340 and
it like the Lyman 457122 mold casts a plain base bullet.

My personal experience has been, a plain base bullet does
not preform well in my RRA .458 SoCom Carbine.

As for now, I've settled on that RCBS Dbl. 320gr FN GC
mold from Midway USA.

Are you shooting your cast 7.62x39 in a semi-auto?
Are you using a Gas Check?

I use a gas check most of the time; Hornady or Blammer.
I'm sizing to .311.

My 500gr Hi-Tek coated thumpers for the .458 SOCOM. I had the mold custom made via Hardline. I push these to around 1000fps and it's similar to shooting 1.5oz slugs from the shotgun. I also run 240gr, 405gr .460" molds for the 458 as well. All are coated with hi-Tek and I've had zero fouling problems.
I will say, if using new Starline brass you will need a pretty aggressive roll crimp to get the cartridges to chamber and eject easily.
