Lead and Babbitt Hammer Heads

I found a bit of info in an old McMaster-Carr hardware catalog that may come in handy.

The catalog states the alloy of the Lead and Babbitt hammer heads that they have for sale..

Lead Hammer Heads : 92% Lead
2% Tin
6% Antimony

Babbitt Hammer Heads : 95% Lead
5% Antimony

Thanks for the information. Here's some mystery metals I got from a buddy. The one on the left has seen use as mallet head and has reportedly been melted several times. It weighs about 11 pounds. The other one has probably been some sort of anvil. It weighs 16 pounds. Both can be dented with finger nail.

I thought to melt these into smaller ingots and use them for boolits with some other lead but Mike Venturino warns about unknown babbitt metals in the Lyman handbook. Perhaps weight vs. volume might indicate something?

If you're really keen there's a dude on these forums called BNE. He will XRF test a sample of your mystery metal for the princely sum of 1lb of lead. Well worth it.

That's good idea but CeeHoo is from Finland and shipping fees to do that are huge. I send 3pcs about 385 grain bullets to NOE and that was almost 20€. But I may offer CeeHoo hint depending where in Finland he lives... There is yank jard on near Tampere called romukioski. That woman who runs that place has that analysator. If you go there and buy some Sn or bring some metal, car batteries etc to recycle or go check what she has on there you might get lucky if asked if she could see what those bricks contain. Maybe offer small fee for job. I bought some Sn from there and she let me checked my self how pure Sn was.
