Is anyone making a production .50-70

Are there any companies similar to Pedersoli, Uberti etc making Rolling Blocks, High Wall, Sharps, or Trap Door single shots in .50-70 that are available in North America? I see some of what I consider Custom makers doing them in $2-4000 rifles, where the more affordable Italian reproduction guns seem to all be in .45-70 or longer, .38-55 and other more modern cartridges.

Shiloh Sharps I know does chamber their rifles in .50-70, .50-90, and I think 50-140, but the price for one of those is fairly steep. C Sharps produces a version of the Sharps they call the 1875 Model which I understand starts around $1400-$1500 and I believe that it is available in .50-70. Don't know how long their waiting list is, Shiloh's waiting list as of three months ago is approximately 2 years for a rifle built to the customers specs. I don't believe either company produces .50 cal rifles unless ordered by the customer.

Pedersoli and Uberti according to their web site don't chamber anything bigger than .45-120 on any of their rifles. Pretty much 38-55, .40-65, .45-70, .45-90, .45-110, and .45-120 are all the chamberings they offer in Sharps, Highwalls, or Rolling Block Replicas. Armi Sport and the rest of Italian gun makers who produce single-shots have a poor reputation for quality.

I have seen a couple of original trapdoor rifles in .50-70 for sale at a couple of the local gunshows lately here in Okla. Asking price was around $800-900 but the rifles looked pretty rough from the outside. Did not check the bores.

Outside of a sharps I would think you would have to get one made up on a surplus rolling block action, large martini or some other large action. Most of the ones I have seen were customs or semi customs. You could look for one of the greener police shotguns and go from there. Frank

I have one made by C Sharps it is there 1874 model and it is not a cheap gun as it cost me just under $2000 three years ago. I bought it off the shelf in their factory store with no wait. Most of their rifles can be had for a 4 month wait for a standard model if they have the barrel in stock. It could be longer if they have to order a barrel. Their 1875 rifle can be had in 50 calibers (50-70, 50-90 and 50-140) and they are several hundred dollers cheaper than their other models they make and they are really good guns. I know this from owning 3 currently and I have owned a few others as well in the past.

buffalo arms lists a texas ranger carbine for about a grand, a quigley for about 2 grand, and an 1874 silhouette for about $1400.00 in 50-70. i think they are all cimarrons. also they have a cuppla others in 50-90 that ya could shoot 50-70s in. for what it's worth and good luck neighbor, bubba.

There was a Shiloh #3 on gunbroker not to long ago in 50-70 with dies and brass for not a lot more ameican dollars , than what an imported from italy knock off of a sharps would cost you....

call Dan at Mc gowan precision barrels. He is making low walls in any caliber i believe, for a very reasonable 1200$. he does beautiful work.

Lone Star Rifle Co. Inc in texas does rolling blocks. they can make you up what you want or you can chose from some of the models that they make

You could also get a 43 shot out Spanish roller and get it rebored to 50-70-
I patiently waited for a Roller 50-70 barrel to turn up and snatched one for $50 during a slow Gunbroker day.
I bought a 1866 Trapdoor some years ago for under $600 that is still one of my favorite caliber .50 smokers.

Beware of Dave Higginbotham, Lone Star.
Once did great work. The last two he built for me (38-55 & 50-70 Rolling Blocks) were shoddy at best. Both rifles had to be returned. Both came back with metals scratched; appeared on purpose. Dave opted not to stand behind anything.

Pedersoli is making them but they are probably going to be hard to find. I got one about 8 months ago on Gun Broker.
The first one I bid on was a 34" full octagon barrel with straight grip and a shotgun butt. It went way beyond what I was willing to pay. Months later another was listed. It was the long range version with shotgun butt, pistol grip, deluxe wood, 34" half round barrel and had a Pedersoli midrange tang installed. For me this was a much better rifle. It was listed as a used rifle but as far as I could tell it was unfired. It came in the factory box with all the original documentation.
