    Range trip with the 40s

Had an interesting day at the range last week. Did a bit of testing with teh 40 cal 185 grain bullets and was was more then pleased with the resluts. Findings corisponded with many others here in that they like to go a bit faster to stabilize, from what I saw 800 fps was about minimum with good accuracy in speeds around 950 FPS.

Don't really want to go into long range results but did have an interesting equipment loss that makes for a good story. Shot my Crony! - - -

Well kind of. I was testing loads and everything was great. Probably 40 rounds into the sesion with the crony set up perfect for consistant results well out of way of the bullet path. So how do you ask....... the Crony was taken out of comision by a 3 grain projectile. That's right "3" grains worth of projectile center punched my LCD screen. I'll let you soak on that one a minute............

Inspection of the LCD screen showed a spent primmer had pierced the glass. I had to laugh a bit. Some how in the process of that custom bullet of mine the spent primer that was in the bullet it's self had came dislodged and vered slightly lower ofcourse then teh rest of the bullet. First time I had seen this. I shot all the bullets that day into a batch of wet newspaper and recovered all of them. Yes I did find the culpret with teh missing primmer. I do not see this as a safty issue at all and like I said it is the first time I had seen it at all with the pistol bullets.

Figured it makes an interesting story. What kind of ft/lbs do you suppose 3 grains has at 950 FPS?

Did send teh crony back for repair. $35 and good to go. As you can imagine it is pretty common replacment.

    Well Good shooting guys.

Interesting indeed. Hate to hear of the loss, glad you were able to get it fixed with at a low cost. While doing range testing, I do notice that every once in while, well twice so far and it shows in a couple of my vids, one bullet, 2 holes on the target. The second hole is smaller than the first and I just figured it was somewhat of a core jacket seperation. Maybe it is the primer coming out. It is possible being all that pressure could loosen the primer from swaging before firing it out of a gun. I will have to pay closer attention next time out.

That's one reason my chronograph box has a 45 degree 3/8" thick steel shield infront of the chrono.

    Just had a wild thought.
How much trouble would it be to leave a raised ring on the punch, just larger than a primer pocket?
    Might crimp the primer in.
Guess it would only be important if you're shootin at a chrono.

Would depriming before swaging cause lead to bleed off through the flash hole?

You get some bleed even with the primer in place.

B T Sniper, Lately I have been cutting off the base with about half of the primer with it. Haven't noticed any separation, but thanks for the heads up. I haven't used the chrony yet, I may block the unit just in case. If anything can go wrong.............!

Since were talking about shooting chrony's with primer seperation and things in this thread, has anyone drew up any plans on how to make a protection cover for them?

Need a crony that has printer or attachment then to read numbers right? I don't have either just the basic model that shows FPS on the face of the chrony its self.

My chrony has a seperate box that connect via phone cord type jobby and it sits on the bench beside me and I just write down the read out. I may check around online, I am sure that someone has marketed some type of bullet proof pexiglass cover for the front of the chrony.
