Can you tell me what you mean by "like a mountain man would have in his possibles bag"? I'm picturing a rock picked up from the ground with one side fairly flat....

Or are these actually machine cut with all sides flat and square?

I beieve I know what these are. I once had a small one like that described. Extremely hard, quite brittle, and mine was less than 1/4" thick. Made the mistake of dropping it on a hard surface, I had two stones! I used it to take burrs off of fish hooks, to do final razor sharp sharpening on my knives. and it was suitable to sharpen straight razor steel.

I hope that's what I'm buying. If I'm right it is a finishing stone that you probably will never wear a groove or depression in. It is not a shaping stone.

    Am I right?

No ... these are quite hard. You can use them to take burrs off of blades, and use them for the final finish. They're really quite remarkable. With a little water on the stone I took the nick out of a hatchet, and finished it to a shaving edge.

They cut faster, but they don't get the same edge on them and they are much more soft. Cooking hardens the stone and transforms the edge from a medium to an extra fine stone.
