    Question 17HM2 vs 17 HMR

why is the 17 hm2 a dead or nearly dead round?
It shoots only slighly slower than its bigger brother,
and is about half the cost of the 17 HMR.

    Horses for courses.

I firmly believe the .17HMR is the Hornet of the new millenia. Amazing accuracy and performance for its size.

Not so sure that the .17H2M will last.

17H2M is gonna be like 22 WRF and 22VLF. No one has heard of them in years!

4 years ago I decided I needed a "magnum" class rimfire cartridge. Did the research and loked at both 22 mag and the 17 HMR as well as the 17H2M.

After looking at the rifles available, and the ballistics, I realized they were nothing but a necked down 22 Long Rifle and I dumped any plans for the H2M fast!

Because the 22 Mag has been around awhile I expected to find more available for it.

I soon realized that most of what was available in 22 mag was either Kimber quality or so so left overs from the 60's!

However the 17HMR had a distinct and forward thinking following to the point of actually having real left handed rifles available with pricing that was not in the Ozone Layer!

A bull barreled Savage lefty rifle soon followed me home!

I have shot expensive center fire rifles that won't keep up with the Savage on a calm day!

The 17H2M was a dinosaur the day it was introduced and nothing has happened to change my mind.

As was said by HeavyMetal no rifles or enough varity of rifles aviable.
I personly like the hm2 way more than the hmr. But I also custom built my hm2 because there was no rifle avaible in hm2 that I liked.

Rifle manufacutres killed the hummer2 right out the gate, you have to build rifles to sell them and only a few made them.

never shot a 17hmr but I do own a Savage bolt in 17m2 and a converted Ruger 10/22 to .17 Aguila/PMC. Happy with both.

I had a .17 HMR but sold it because the ammo was too expensive for what it is and because I can reload centerfire for less. I do have a CZ 452 in .17 HM2 though and love the cartridge. A couple years ago a local gun store went out of business and I bought all the ammo they had at $3 a box so should be set for years to come. But if the round ever goes the way of the dinosaur (which I doubt will ever happen), I'll just have it rebored to .22 lr and keep shooting.
    Keep moving forward!
