I'm going to scope it!

Back from the range, could keep both the Goex FFg & Swiss 1.5 inside the 8 ring at 50 yards but at a 100 I can not see the front sight well enough to make me happy. My eyes for that work just aren't getting the job done, I even went back to the rear leaf sight and tried at least 3 different front inserts.
Will start shopping for a Malcom scope.

I hung a set of 1 diopter readers on my glasses , and it cleared up the front sight very nicely..Dean

Did you try heavy (wide ring) apertures like the Lyman 17A comes with?
The narrow rings are difficult for me to see but i do well with the heavier rings.

Yes but I was still having problems, I think its more of a focus thing, I like the pinhead post the real thin post with a dot on top, at 50 it was okay at one hundred just a blurr. It was super bright high sky and zero clouds may have been a problem plus I was shooting without sunglasses which I usually wear.

I just used the dime store varity til i went to the eye doc , he put a set of lenses in a pair of spring loaded sunglasses they fit the glasses a lot better than two pair from the drug store. He made mine 1 power or diopter or whatever they are called , if you use readers , try what tyou normallly use.

I had to put a Malcolm style scope on my 45-70 roller. I shoot to 1000 yards and I just can't see well enough any more. The scope allows me to keep on shooting long range BPCR.

I fitted a 6X Malcolm to my 40/65 for similar reasons, the old eyes are failing faster than the body

B.A.W. what does it take to attach the mounts? That almost looks like clamp on?

The front mount fits into the existing dovetail base. two screws hold the rear mount, one for the existing open sight and only one additional hole needs to be drilled and tapped.

Bad Ass, who did you get the scope and mounts through? How do you find the mounts? are they consistant in making changes?

My local gunsmith bought them back from USA; I believe Leatherwood Optics sell them. Cost here in Oz was $AU1300 to supply & fit

Adjustments took some time to sort as the number of clicks depends on the distance between mounting points and its 3 clicks per MOA. I'd like to get a 7inch extension for the front to make it better for bench shooting else cut 2" off the barrel and move the scope back accordingly

Appears to be consistant but it hasn't fired many thousands of rounds yet to determine the long term performance with a bit of wear.

Using the Lyman tapered bullet I get a full 65gn Swiss in the case; this 10 shot group bench rest at 100yds

Thanks for that, Bad Ass, I have been thinking about getting a scope for my Spagetti Hiwall, but I will need to be able to take the scope off and put the irons back on to shoot in competitions.

Refitting the iron sights takes about 10 mins including 6 mins for the, "Where did I leave that darn screwdriver!"

If you are looking for a scope and mounts, take a look at the Montana Vintage Arms web site. There are several options that do not require removing the front sight. When Shiloh Sharps built my 50/90 in 2003, I had them mount a set of blocks. Set the scope and mounts on, tighten a couple of screws and go sight it in. The scope is one my big project for extra money this winter....after moulds.

In the meantime, I got the thickest post insert off my MVA sight card and used it at Quigley last week. The big boys didn't have much competition from me, but I had a great time and used up almost 200 rounds in practice and the 48 rounds for score. (Laura, auburn hair from Omaha and wearing a railroad cap, spotted for everyone on our relay and her advice really helped me out.)
