Hi all

I cast my first batch of bullets a couple of weeks ago using wheel weights and the RCBS 37-250 mould.
Since these bullets will have gas checks, what sought of velocity will I be able to obtain before leading occurs?
or should I heat treat and quench in water as well as use the gas checks?

We can't predict.

Depends on the condition of your barrel, your choice of lube, your firing rate or ambient temperature, the bullet diameter bore relationship, throat dimensions and condition, your choice of powder. And as this will blow your mind, sometimes the answer to leading is to actually go softer. So it all depends.

Getting more down to earth, a couple of the RCBS molds i've had access to cast out at 0.3775". Put a gas check on them, run them through a 0.378" die and lube them. You shouldn't have any trouble with air cooled wheel weights up to about 1900 fps in a 375 Win. If your running something else, you need to give more details.

.............Congratulations with your first batch of cast. Be sure you did all the homework required beforehand. Number one on the hit parade would be to at least have slugged the barrel.

With a good lube in a good barrel and cast of at least WW type (11 to 14bhn) alloy, you should be able to attain posted modern levergun 38-55 ballistics with'em.

Hi all

I Lubed and gas checked my first batch, they shot reasonably well.
Metal used was Wheel Weights, Weight of projectiles as cast was 264 grains,
once they were sized, lubed and ges checked weight was 270 grains.

After developing some loads I chose 27 grains of ADI AR 2207, I'm not sure what the velocity is like yet, I do know this load kicks like a mule, my shoulder was sore for 3 days, I'll have to get a better recoil pad than the factory rubber pad that is on the rifle at the moment.

I've just cast another 300 projectiles, I only had 8 left from my first batch of 100,
what a fantastic way to pass the time, make bullits and shoot them.
