    Cerro-Bend 158

Doing some spring cleaning and consolidation in the basement and I found 2 ingots of this:

I was pretty pleased thinking I came up with 2 pounds of chamber casting alloy. A quick internet search cured that. This stuff isn't the same as Cerrosafe at all. It doesn't shrink when cooling, but expands .00057 inches per inch. 6 ten thousandths isn't much, but I bet it would be plenty to stick a chamber cast tight as you please.

Oh well, maybe there's a pot of gold on the next shelf.

Had a guy try to sell me some of the same stuff. He used it to make dental molds of some type. He wanted $15 a pound. i said thanks but no thanks.

    Above link lists the alloy.

Contains bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium.

The 13% tin sounds nice, but not sure I want the bismuth and cadmium in my melt...

On the up side, I'm all set if I ever need to do some precision tube bending.

I have used it for tube bending -- very thin walled tubing will collapse when bent without it or an alternative. So, I acquired a small amout at a very reasonable price I did make some chamber casts with it many years ago - As I recall it worked ok -- I think it grows after cooling so if you remove the cast as soon as it solidifies it is fine --- But --it was a long time ago --

    Imashooter,
You haven't told us how much they weigh and how much you want for them!

    Let me know.

    There's a 1.25 and a 1.5 ingot. All up 2.75 pounds.

And you know dang well that as soon as I sold it I'd find a need and be kicking myself for letting it go. I'll let it get dusty for another couple years before I part with it.

Got the archeologist hat out, was just given ~ 6 pounds of Cerrobend. My supply of Cerrosafe is pretty low. Thought I was in tall cotton.

Then I found this thread. Bummer.

There's an aviation museum that is restoring a WWII PT boat about 60 miles from my house. (I'll let you know when that last sentence STARTS to make sense.)

I'll have to check, they may be able to use it making lines, they are re-powering it to diesel. Eventually they want to give rides on Lake Erie. Complete with propane powered 50's.

    WOW, talk about thread drift!

But at least I won't try and do a chamber cast on a buddies Rigby.

Dennis - I would be interested in that PT boat project. My uncle served on one in WWII and I would like to see one up close. He was the only crew member on that PT boat who wasn't killed or wounded during enemy action in the south Pacific. He was the 20 MM gunner.

I wonder how the cerro-bend would work for making dropped lead shot?

You could probably buy shot cheaper.

Don, it's in Port Clinton, here's the website:http://www.libertyaviationmuseum.org.

They are completely rebuilding it, I donated a stack of oak plank from the farm last summer. They're always looking for help. I know they have a work party every Tuesday. I've got two buddies that go down most Tuesdays.

Unfortunately a number of years ago the museum contracted with a local marina to do a major refit and the marina didn't have a clue what they were doing. They did far more damage than good. Basically the marina took buckets of cash and left the boat in worse shape than they started.

If it was a little closer I'd be tempted to volunteer, 120+ mile round trip is a bit of a stretch.

It's a nice little museum, the Ford Trimotor usually gives rides out of there about the 4th of July. Cool ride.

It's about time to do that again. I remember watching it fly in and out of Put-in-Bay back in the 70's and early 80's. Billed itself as the world's shortest airline.

At $15/pound probably out of my price range, even with the crazy price for bird shot they're getting now.
