    These look awesome.

But how do they shoot? I've noticed that of all the cast bullets being sold, not many of them have this type of point nose. Is there a reason for that?

Some of the threads on this forum seem to indicate that pointy nose cast bullets aren't as conducive to accuracy as the lesser-pointed nose bullets.

I'd venture to guess that this is just one of those cases were folks have read that this was the case rather than actually tested them their-selves; and then proceeded to pass along this mis-information.

I recently started shooting a Lyman "Pointy-Nose" bullet with good results right from the start. (311359) I'm kinda hoping Mr. Swede made some extra.

It looks like this bullet might be one I'd be interested in trying. Could this bullet design be used for long-range shooting (300-500 yrd) or is it more for short range work?

If one of you guys could post some of your on-target results I'd really appreciate it.

The nose of a pointy bullet isn't supported well by the rifling. So any misalignment with the bore, when cast from a soft alloy can cause the nose to slump or bend. Naturally, the faster you try to push the bullet, the more rpm is involved and the more likely it is to happen. Without trying very hard I've got around 2 moa with this bullet's little brother the 308329, out of my Krag rifles. That was around 1600fps, and as stated I've not worked with it much. Keep an eye out on the group buy results as folks get to play with this one.

"The nose of a pointy bullet isn't supported well by the rifling."

    Thank you madsenshooter:

This was the argument against this type of bullet that I eluded to. I just couldn't remember exactly how it went or how to put it into words.

I had Erik over at hollow-pointing-service drill both cavities on my 311359 mold for a set of thin hollow pointing pins. I wanted my bullets hollow pointed but not with pins so fat that they altered the pointy nose profile of my bullets.

I believe if I were to get hold of one of these bullet molds I'd be inclined to do the same thing. I mean, have both cavities hollow pointed with very thin hollow point pins.

It may sound crazy -and it may very well be crazy- but, my rational behind this type of hollow pointing is that a tube of the same diameter as a bar, cast of the same alloy just seems like it would have a little more rigidity.

On these pointy nose bullet, having them hollow pointed not only changes the center of gravity but it turns those pointy noses into tubes rather than just a long nose/bar.

In theory; mitigating the slumping if misaligned in the bore. Of course, there's no way I can prove that. In my "minds-eye" that's just the way I see it.

The more I think about it, the more I"d like to get one of these bullet molds. Maybe I can buy some off one of you guys if you were willing to sell me a few.

Got Mine in the mail today!!!! As we have come to expect, it looks great. This is what I call Christmas, two new molds in two days. I doesn't get any better. Got the mold in the oven temp cycling.

Thanks Jim for all your work and Swede for a great mold

There are a lot of molds to get shipped in this group buy. I am getting them out in batches (two so far and another tomorrow).

I think that the reason I got mine so quick is that I live only about 200 miles, if that far, from Jim and I am near the top of the list.

That and the fact that the .311s are going out first. The shop had to handle it as three separate GBs because of the different sizes and the number of molds.

Carl, I plead ignorance. Why are you baking the mold?
    Thanks,

Woodsroad - Just following the instructions that come with NOE molds. "To Season our moulds - run it up to operating temperature (about 350 to 400 deg.) and let it cool back down to room temp. Do this three or four times. This will give the alignment pins a chance to seat in."

I have done this with all of my NOE molds. I can't say that it makes a difference or not but I am sure SwedeNelson knows a lot more than I do about his molds.

Got the rest packaged, labeled, and ready to mail. 27 packages go into the mail tomorrow.

We have a VERY widely dispersed family of casters here. Packages are going to worldwide destinations from Tasmania to Finland. Canada is generously covered as well. In the US, packages are going to from Alaska to Florida and California to Maine.

Got mine. I have three molds staring at me now, begging me for a test run.

I'm holding out for receipt of:

    .308 round nose
    .502 700 grain

Then I'll be casting for weeks solid!!!

I keep staring at the sharp point in the mold blocks, and wondering how in heck these guys machined that! Nice work.
