    ground rod

found a copper ground rod today , i was going to take it home for rond stock for the lathe because I thought it would be solid copper , it isn't it is a copper tube filled with a lead looking substance, seems a little light for lead ( maybe, maybe not) seems a little hard , lynotype maybe , does anyone know what ground rods are made of ?

There are a variety of ground rods - steel, copper plated steel, solid copper, and copper coated aluminum. My experience has mostly been with copper coated steel; these can be driven into the ground. I have also used the copper coated aluminum rods which we tried to drive but ended up just having to burry them. The solid copper ones tend to bend like a wire coat-hanger when driven into hard Iraqi dirt...
Anyway, I've never seen or used any like you describe.

thanks for the info it is probably copper coated steel , the copper is fairly thick 1/16- 1/8th inch thick , and it is soft steel but a source of lead it is not . back to hunting

I've gotten some of that stuff with the thick copper coating. It can fool ya at first.

Copper-coated lead rods would be a dream-come-true for those who swage bullets!
