    Forklift "may" have counterweights?

I got a broken down old forklift I got permission to tear apart to get the counterweights. Its an old one, probably 30 years old on the smaller side. Its got like a steel body with flip up panels which I've looked around under but with only 10 minutes invested I don't see the weights so far.

Me thinks this could be a good find but its at my wifes work and while I got permission to snag the weights I don't have permission to say get in there with an angle grinder and cut this thing into pieces over a few days. Sooo..

With that said anyone have experience gutting one of these things? What can I expect?

    Do some research first.
What type of unit is this and does it have lead in it.
If it's a hassle, move on.

Sheepdog, FYI, I've been in the forklift industry since 86 and the only lead counterweights I've ever seen was home made add ons added to the top of the cast iron rear weight.

I did, the manufacture wont get back to me on it. Not sure if its cast iron or lead weights.

Sounds like its probably a wash. SWIAFB if I got the make/model can you verify this model doesnt use lead?

    Forklift "may" have counterweights

Based on my 24 years as a Federal Coal Mine inspector, it is NOT likely that any forklift
counterweight will contain lead. Those I saw most frequently had cast iron or steel counterweights.

Sheepdog, hate to tell you this but I have never seen any lead counterweights on a Clark forklift. And the two companies that I have worked for worked on a lot of old Clark units.
Now inner cell connectors that link the industrial battery cells to each other in electric 24-36-48 volt applications, is a whole diffrent story.

    fork lift weight

Guys I just picked up a LEAD counterweight off a fork lift. Well I cut it up and dragged it to my truck, it weighted in at 525Lbs 26"x26"x2 1/2". Seems like pure lead to me took a little over 600 degrees to get it to melt. I get a pic and post it tomorrow, most of the add on weights for lift trucks (older) are lead. The rear weight moves out (away from the driver) and the lead weight is set in, or the truck has a flat top back and the weight is stacked on top over rear wheels. Sometimes you get lucky and the whole back end is lead take a ball peen hammer and give it a smack you will be able to tell right away.
