ID shotgun hulls

Need a crash course on identifying 12 gauge shotgun hulls for reloading.

It has been years since shotshell reloading and need to learn all over again what hulls to look for...

I know about Winchester AA's...is there help out there on the web? Pictures would be great.

Brother-in-law gave me 10 gallons of hulls. They look to be mostly Remington RXP's (rough shape), and some other black low base Remington's with only the shot #stamp on them.

The others are Winchester and Remington hulls from inexpensive promotional shells they sold at WalMart about 15 years ago.

I may post pics later for others here to identify.

All 12 gau 2 3/4"

Older Black Rem hull with plactic base is a Uni Body
Rem hull with fiber base isn't safe IMO to reload , a pitch hull
Newer GREEN Rem prmo hulls are of the STS design AKA Gun Club
STS hull my be a number of colors and have STS, Nitro 27, Premier RXP and Gun Club on them , brass height from low to high
Remington also has at least 2 other hulls they load , normaly High brass
Most common is the type 6 , not much load data for lead loads
Look into each high brass hull and compare to a known STS type hull


Win has 2 AA type hulls , load data isn't 100% interchangable
Old AA hulls normaly say AA on the head
And the new HS hulls normaly a slick plastic , simalare to the feel of a Rem STS hull

Win promotional hulls smooth or lightly ribbed with a seperate normaly white base wad ( dove& quail ect) are Poly formed


Fed has the Gold Medal hull ( ribbed or smooth ) with a plactic base , NORMALY says Gold Medal on the base if low brass , but some high brass loads us this hull not marked Gold Medal

They also load another plastic hased hull called the Federal 1 piece hull , normaly only floaded in buck shot or Steel shot
It has a recessed base for more hull space , the primer area will look higher than the rest of the inside of the hull
Fed paper hulls , a all paper hull ( no plastic )

Then they also load the paper based Federal Hi Power type hull
It is the hull used for the Federal and Estate Promo hulls and most high brass hunting loads

Then there is the Cheddite hull , lots of companys load them
Most of the time regaurdless of who loads it and the color
The head will have Stars and 12 with a line between them
Expect Kent loads that hull ( gray) with just Kent on the head
Rio and Wolf hulls are Cheddite

Active hulls may be red , yellow or black and are all plactic ( no brass ) and use their own load data

Fiocchi and any PMC hull without the Stars and 12 pointing it out as a Cheddite hull
Are the same and use Fiocchi load data

There a number of other lower cost imported hulls that I can't remember all the details on

Sellier & Bellot hulls ARE NOT RELOADBLE most of the time
Pitch all of their hulls

You will find it is the easiest to pick one kind of hull and get set up for it. I load the new AA's and you have to set up your press a little different than you would say when loading the old AA's or Rem unibodies. This way it is much easier to order your components. What kind of press do you plan on using?

If you need a reintroduction to shotshell reloading, www.shotgunworld.com is a good place to look for reloading info. and more. Back when I loaded a lot of shotshells I kept sectioned hulls on hand for internal dimensions reference. When a new hull came along I sectioned one and added it to the collection. BB's right about standardizing on a common well-known to the extent possible, especially in light of all the imported hulls on the market now.

I will have to disagree with the stick with 1 hull idea

Yea learn on a easy hull like the Rem STS

But if you hunt or shoot different games

You can know what is in the hull just by witch one it is

I load the old AA with 1 1/8 oz of 8 at 1200 for trap or sporting calys
Rem STS are all 1 oz of 8 at 1220
The black Rem Uni body hulls are 7/8 oz of 8 at 1150 fps
Fed Top gun hulls are 1 oz of steel at 1600 fps
Fed Gold Medal hulls are 1 3/8 oz of 5 at 1330
Wolf hulls are 1 1/4 oz of 6 at 1330 fps

I can pick up a box of shells and know exactly what is in them

And some of the imported hulls do need strange wads so they might not be the best
Unless you can get tons of them free , then it is worth buying a odd ball wad

The 3 hulls I never load are the old Rem black hulls with the fiber base , the Sellier & Bellot and the Win Poly formed hulls

OK here is what I have to work with.
All are once fired except the Rem RXP's which are well used, dirty, and some are splitting; they will need a good sorting.
I should have enough of each type to suffice my wanting to load #00 and slugs.

I guess my question is if these are suitable for this and can I substitute them in the load data for Winchester AA's and Remington STS's.

Headstamps are: Winchester, Remington, Remington, Remington My "new" Pacific DL-105 It is red!! Really!! Not pink as it looks in the pic!!!

good aa hulls can be had anytime at cabelas.

i have used ww-AA for 25 years they are hard to beat!

stick with one and a different load can be labeled on box......

Win Poly formed , junk IMO
Rem RXP , a great hull just use data for that hull
Rem Uni Body
Probely Rem Uni Body , but maybe Gun Club
Need to look inside to be sure
