I started this project about mid November. The walnut blank, I got from board member Peter Nap. A much nicer piece of wood than I expected, and I still owe Don a good deal of some sort in the future.
The barrel is from Bauska. I bought a half dozen or so barrels when the shop was being closed out, at $20 each.
I had originally planned on making this into a smooth rifle, as I have a fowler I don't particularly care for the stocking job I did on it. However, when the blank arrived, it had a split in about the first six inches of the wood. Most likely from shipping, or the great difference in humidity between the east, and here. I considered doing a repair on it, but then dug into my barrel stash.
I found a 43 inch .40 caliber swamped barrel in light profile, that would work out fine. I laid out the barrel to go to one side of the split, and angled it back towards the wrist area, working in a bit of off cast.
I had one of Chamber's Queen Anne locks that I had planned on using for the smooth rifle concept. I was somewhat concerned it may be a bit too small on that project. As it is, it worked perfectly for this size barrel.
I hadn't did a sliding wooden patchbox before, so put one on this project. It turned out to be a simple project, but probably took at least as much time as it would have, to inlett a regular patch box. Making and fitting the lid latch properly was most likely the thing that took the most time on this part.
