    My Lead Routine-Is this Good?

    Hi,
I do not get a lot of time to shoot so my lead consumption is probably low compared to others here. I get scrap wheel weights from a local front end shop and every other haul,I buy an 18 pack of Heineken ($20) and put it in there fridge. I just smelted 2 trips worth of WW and came out with 68# of smelted ingots! So I have $20 tied up in obtaining the WW, is this good?

I don't think you're doing badly. One has to go with their local market prices. But figuring you had 20% loss in clips and junk that means you are getting it for about $0.24 /pound which is definitely a reasonable price in my book. The prices have been sneaking up in my area with most being $0.50 and above. In that context, you're doing very well.

Would your suppliers be just as happy with a domestic beer?

I give $20 for 100# of raw wheelweights, including some zinc and steel. Comes out to about 60# of ingots.

We'll look back on these posts in a few years and wish for the "good ol days". I suspect lead will be outright banned or heavily regulated and casting will be rather expensive.

    $20 divided by 68# equals 29.4 cents a pound.

I'd say that is pretty good.

    Hi Gentlemen,
Thanks for the responses! Yes I guess everyone is happy with the setup. Of course when the economy picks up I will get more for my money because they will do more business and balance more tires! At least this way when another guy comes along wanting WW,they will tell him they are saving them for me. I guess that is worth something!
Yes,actually Rolling Rock is my beer of choice, but these guys are Finnish Americans and I wanted to impress on them to save the WW for me,so I bought the Heiniken!!! So far so good!

Stopped by a local tire shop the other day to check on WW. He had 3 buckets full by the door. He said his going price was $100 for a five gal bucket. Dont know if he was telling the truth or not, but I hav'nt been back. Cant believe someone would pay that much. Bob
