So, not to resurrect a thread, but yet to give it new life (taking a break from my Advent 3 sermon right now...). For those of us who will only shoot slugs to the tune of a few dozen per year, is it cost effective to purchase the 20 gauge tooling for my MEC press, a roll-crimping tool from BPI, and the gas seals, fiber wads, and sabots, plus projectiles, to load my own? This sounds like quite a bit of start up cost, and I can buy a lot of commercial sabot rounds for $300. I handload everything else that I shoot, but I'm not sure about diving into the slug reloading game. Convince me that I have the time and that it is worth it to get started!

Greetings Selmerfan, its all about cooking your own and getting the satisfaction of creating your own custom loads at 20 to 25 cents a pop.

Right now the Sabots slugs are going for $3 to 5 a shot and to me it seems like in the near future they will soon be $6 a shot.

If you read my last few posts, I'll suggest you back your self up with enough powder, hulls and Lee molds to carry you over for at least for 2 years and lets hope things change in our favor.

After reading your post I do not think you'll need more than a lb of say LongShot at $18:
    https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.c...p?sku=00034LS1
    Blue Dot at $
    SR4756 at $
Universal or Herco, now that is lets say $20 a can.
I tried looking for you but mostly out of stock.
You'll be far better off buying the powder locally and start off with just one can around $20

Here is the Lee .575" RB mold for $18.06
    https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.c...sku=0000690461

Lets say you buy 200 hulls at special @15 each bag =$30:
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Fio...tinfo/0642030/
Here is a good scale for $26
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/BPI...300/?EM131207A
Here are your wads for 250 @ $8
    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Fio...tinfo/0642030/

Whats missing is the Circle Fly nitro cards 500 for $6 or a 1000 for $9
    1. .125-20 gauge
    2. .125-28 gauge
    3. .250-20 gauge
    http://www.circlefly.com/
    Tel.# 717-862-3600

    Buy a used Mec 600 for $60 to 75
Skip the $30 Roll crimper for now!

You can get started for under $200 and you'll be glad you did.
Please note in 20 gauge we have been improving this load and as of right now we are putting in the wad 1/16" nitro card of 28 gauge followed by 2- .125-28 gauge nitro cards below RB in wad, the first nitro card Must be pushed in all the way down home with the help of a socket, like this:

I gave you my last 2 cents and feel free to ask questions.
I just set you up for this cute baby loads that are fun to assemble and shoot but at the same time deadly.

What kind of accuracy are you getting from these slug loads? I'll be using them in a Rem. 11-87 rifled slug barrel w/scope. Can you reduce loads for managed recoil? Looking to set my 10 y/o daughter up for deer hunting in the Minnesota shotgun zone and I'd rather not buy slugs. I've got access to a MEC single stage, already own scale and powders and primers. Just need hulls, wads, and projectiles - I think I even have the card wads needed in an old stash at dad's place.

And what kind of wad are you using there? How is the recoil and will they function in a gas-operated gun such as an 11-87?

Hello Selmerfan, the .575" RB loads are great to shoot and I can look up some even lighter loads and secondly your Rem. 11-87 will also soften the recoil further.

So if I could pick up an inexpensive Lee Load All 2, I can get started on the 20 ga slug loading game, right? I've got a P/W progressive 12 ga, but I don't want to sink a bunch of money into a 20 gauge loader that will only see limited use.

Good morning Selmerfan, I feel you will be better served with a used Mec 600 for $60 to 75 than a $50 Lee Load All 2, tho the Lee Load All will get the job done!

Let me warn you, the 20 gauge is very appealing and great fun to shoot and is more like a Big Game Nitro Express!
I fell in love with mine, carefully read my post.

Good luck finding a used MEC 600 Jr. for $60-75. I checked all of the usual places online. They're all running $95-125 right now. I KNOW I'd be better served with the MEC - I grew up loading 12 gauge on one. But even the tooling to change my father's to a 20 gauge is over $50 and is hard to find used. Right now my 12 gauge is fed by a P/W 600B loader, and I'd rather have a very simple single stage to teach my daughter to load shotgun shells on. If/when I find a 20 ga MEC at the $60-75 pricepoint I'll buy it and sell the Lee Load All II (if I can...) Or I could put both daughters on loading shells - they love to help and learn!

Hello Selmerfan, Here is one right now for $50
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEC600-JR-20...item3388831cf7
Here is one right now for $75
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MEC-600-JR-M...item3a88843298

and for my other Brother's looking for 12 gauge Mec here is one 12 ga for $50
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mec-Jr-600-r...item19e64d9fcf

Don't forget a good loader is a long term investment, don't hesitate give a lending hand to your beautiful daughter's, teach them well!

Here is a little trick when buying from E-Bay, never click "Add to watch list"
Quietly watch items and do not let others know you are watching and wait till the last 26 to 28 seconds right before bidding so this way no one can out bid you, hopefully your Internet service is fast enough!!!!
I wish you and your family the very best!!!

Hello Brother Cpileri, Those loaders are suppose to be ready to start loading and fold crimping, so read the comments carefully that all parts are complete.
I have 4 progressive loaders, hull sizing, de-priming, priming, wad pressure and final crimping with the machine for sabots, slugs, round ball and buck shot needs to be loaded by hand, followed by final crimping with the machine.
Weigh each charge for Sabot, slug and round ball individually for consistency and accuracy!!!

OK, you have me tempted on those MEC reloaders, too. Correct me if I am wrong, but do those listed not include the dies?

IOW, is there an additional expense tied to any of these? or are they "ready to go" like the less-desireable but ready to roll Lee Load-Alls?

I've bid the $50 one up to $67 and still haven't hit the high bid of the original bidder. I put in $76 on the other and I'm the current high bidder. We'll see what happens. The Lee isn't purchased yet.

Hello Selmerfan, you do not bid on it till the last 28 to 30 seconds are left for the bidding to end, that's the trick, not before hands as the price keeps going up and you end up wasting your hard earned money!
Please read my post #29 carefully!
Here is a brand new one for $96, double check it tho, free shipping including!!

I think you fail to understand. When someone else enters a "maximum bid", it only goes up the increment necessary to win. For example, in this case, the minimum bid was $50. But the first bidder put in a maximum bid somewhere north of my $67. Every time I enter a bid lower than his maximum bid, ebay will automatically move his bid higher, instantaneously. The only way to win at the last second is to find where the max bid is at, then hold there, let him/her bid over, then try to overbid his or her max bid at the last second. If I enter a bid higher than the current showing bid with 30 seconds left, but his or her max bid is still higher than my bid, they win. Ebay has effectively tried to cut down on just this kind of sniping on bids.
