    wall HANGER??

I bought a traditions .50 caliber percushion "rifle" at the club shoot & raffle sunday. A previous owner had circumsized the barrel to 14" from the nipple to the muzzle. I don't believe it was shot since, as there is a burr on the outside AND inside of the muzzle. I remember some stories about Traditions being unsafe to shoot with heavy loads. ??? Any way the guy dropped the price to 5 bucks,so I bought it ! Expensive for a tomato stake but some of the stuff the wife hangs on the walls is much costlier!

#1 - Those stories are just stories... unless by "Heavy" you mean 150gr+ loads, which no sidelock is really designed to handle. 80-100gr FF is more than plenty to whack a deer and is "safe" in almost any ML - even genuine Period barrels.

#2 - Recrown the barrel and you will have a neat brush "carbine" to play with. Probably won't win any accuracy trophies, but it should hold "Minute of Deer or Hog" with 80gr & PRB at 75yds.

#3 - depending on the twist/depth of rifling try a 360gr MinnieBall. Most 1/48 "modern" barrels seem to really like a pure lead minnie. Again, 80 - 100gr FF.

If the lock is servicable, fit it with a new barrel. Green Mountain makes them in many calibers, lengths, and thicknesses and they are accurate to the extreme.

Never throw anything away until you've tried it at least once. You can probably cut the stock and turn it into a pistol worst case.

...............My my but that double percushion pistol is a handsome dude! What was the doner? I betcha it's a handfull. Anyway, it appears cleaner to me then the short double with the intact buttstock. That one, while attractive seems unbalanced appearing to my eye.

The doner was that pile of Navy Arms 12ga parts.

So far I'm pushing .690 RB in paper cartridges over 50gr 3F.

Not quite my old .454 loads (350grWFN/31grH110 @ 2200ftlbs) but nice all the same.
