How much lube will I need for 16,000 boolits?

I will be casting .41 Long Colt hollow base boolits with three lube grooves (for black powder). I will be making my own lube (don't know what recipe yet) and am not sure how many pounds I will need. I would like to make blocks of it and store it.

Take a 41 Long Colt and weigh it. Then put any lube into the grooves and then weigh the bullet. The difference is the weight of the lube in grains.
1 grains = 0.000142857143 pounds

Personally, I feel you are on the foolish side making so much lube ... but what ever floats your boat!

I would make a small batch first and make sure it does what you want before you go crazy making it. I bet the majority of us are not doing everything the same way now, as when we first started.

For bp, try Emmert's formula. Make small batches as it goes rancid after a while.

Figure 4-5gr of lube per bullet, about 12# should do it.

I would like to see how long it takes to use up 12 lbs of lube shooting BP. If it turns out to be good lube he could always sell the 9 lbs he has left. You should read some of the stickies about lubes and do some research before you waste a pile of raw material. What is wrong with the slow approach? My step father goes to a buffet and piles his plate to where it runs over, and I always tell him that you do know you can go back. Well you do know that you can always make more of a good product.

Since the day the very first boolit was made there is only one thing that has not changed and never will change, the simple fact that everything changes.

I would be willing to bet that if you make up a large batch of lube today that next year you will be using a different, lube, alloy, cartridge etc.

Go a bit slower, you'll save yourself time, money, effort and frustration.

I'd say go easy on your lube making enterprise until you really know what's going to work.

You'll be a VERY long time firing off that much lead!

Out of curiosity, what diameter are these bullets.

Out of curiosity, what diameter are these bullets.

They are .386" hollow base, but I also have two heeled boolit molds for this caliber that are a little different.

Thanks for the replies and advice. I at least wanted to get the beeswax I needed for that amount because I live near a bee place. I got 14lb of beeswax, who knows if I will ever use that much but I will store it and make maybe 1lb of lube at a time.
