    Exclamation Starter loads 45-70

After a bunch of reading I loaded up 10 each to try out:
300 gr RCBS FP-GC Fed. 210 primer, 43.5 grs Varget Starline case.

405 gr Magma FP Fed 210 primer, 40.0 grs Varget Starline case.

I'll use these in my Pedersoli Sharps cup for each load is under 15,500 for both loads any thoughts?

i use to use an old 22 blank starter pistol My 45-70 brought the cops.. ( Could not resist sorry
Seriously i use either Universal Clays or Unique . I find 4759 at 23 g nice for 350 g at about 1200fps. I agree with Varget It is one of the most accurate powders in my 45-70 Ruger at 42 g or so. It has a sharper recoil than 4759 but not by much. It is in the same class as 4064

I bought a case of Starline brass and find it of excellent quality but for low pressure loads it needs to be annealed as it is made purposely hard for hot loading that a lot of people like to do. Your loads sound good to me but I mostly shoot cast in mine and when using smokeless I almost always use AA 5744 as it has given good velocity and is not position sensitive. My favorite loads are a 325 RCBS boolit over 29 gr of AA 5744 or a 400 gr Lyman bullet over 27 gr of AA 5744. Of coarse most of my bullets are propelled by black powder.

5744 is my favorite powder also. 27 gr behind a Ranch Dog 350 w/o the gas check on it, is very accurate in my Pedersoli Sharps.

Can't find any 5477 locally right now, I do have a pound of IMR 3031 but the more I look at the load chart for it I'm thinking not for trapdoor or Sharps.
I just can't bring myself to paying the $25 hazmat charge for a pound of 5477.
Going over to AZ to watch some spring training baseball and will hit Cabela's while I'm there may get lucky.

    TRAIL BOSS.
Alot has been written about it here, but the short of it is.

Check hogdgon's site. They list loads for the 45-70 and different boolit weights.
70% loaded case capacity is usually a sweet spot.

I watch the loads as I only shoot either a Trapdoor or Sharps usually BP only for the trapdoor, I'd like to find some usable smokless loads I can shoot in both.
I have a pound of 3031 but have not used it yet.
4759 is the other powder I'd like to try.

With the types of actions and type of loads you want to shoot- either 4759 or 5744 are good bets.

..............3031 is an okay powder for the 45-70, and is useable in the TD but honestly it really comes into it's own toward the mid to upper end of things. I personally think that 3031 is THE major effort powder in that cartridge. I've had excellent results in the 45-70 using Unique, 4759, 4227, 4198, and 3031. I have a TD carbine, a full length TD, a MAS36 I converted to 45-70 and a Pedersoli Sharps in that cartridge and those 5 powders handle anything I want to do with any boolit weight from 292 to 500 grs.

    Buckshot,
    I have a H&R standard 45/70 that I have never shot.
Was wanting to shoot it with the lee 340 and 405 grain boolits.
Which of the powders do you think would be best?

28grs of IMR 4198 gave me a very pleasant/accurate load with a 420 gr slug.

I just loaded up some try out rounds, 11 grs of Unique, 405 gr magma bullet federal 210 primer. Saw another member use something simular in his rolling block and the 50 yd group was outstanding.

5744 works great .Keep it down in the trapdoor load level ,if you push it with a 1-18 twist
you won't be able to keep it on a 4' X 4' sheet of plywood
I guess higher velocities , light bullet & fast twist don't mix. I was playing around while fireforming some brass before loading BP 27 gr w/ a 420 gr pb bullet you from a rest can hit 200m chickens all day , offhand well.
A few more grains & things just went crazy, RPM threshhold or something of that sort.

I'm doing my first BP loads, 60 grs by wt of Goex FFg fill a Starline case to within 1/4" of the case top, my 405 gr Magma bullet would allow for .200 of compression, I have wads so based on a bit of advise I'm going to add one then seat the bullet, I do have one of the case expanders that Wolf recommends in his book, also a powder compression die.
I've loaded smokeless for years I feel like I'm stepping into unchartered waters.
