Shipping out Lead Packages during the Holiday Season

Today I shipped out 3 packages of lead. In the hopper: 6 more packages, but those will be for next week. So, I go to the post office prepared with reading material should the line be long. Somtimes I can hit it just right, but not usually with Christmas around the corner. Thought I'd share with you what the post office looks like, filled with people. And sometimes, the line is out the door!!!! My trusty fold-up cart (compacts down to a height of 9 inches) is a life saver!!!! Today's wait was 20 minutes, and I made a dent in the puzzles!

A side note: all the packages are ready to go, but they still make you wait in line to drop them off. Seeing that I have to wait in line, I have them do an acceptance scan so that I get the actual printout. Before, I used to trust them to do the acceptance scan in the back room but it is not always done. In order to get a printout, you have to do it at the counter where the clerk's scale is. When they do it in the back room, a portable hand held scanner is used (and no paper receipt can be generated). I find it an extra measure of security to get the paper receipt because sometimes the packages are NOT scanned at all of the stops made along the route (so it looks like they were never mailed). This way, I have proof that the packages indeed left my hand and were mailed.

Wow. I'm glad you are willing and able to deal with that! I hope you can continue to make a profit in this business.
I'm not sure where all the money is that I've "saved" by casting and reloading!

That's dreadful. My post office has an area where you can drop off packages that are ready to go. It's a godsend at this time of year, and every one wins. So sorry that yours doesn't.

Thanks for your empathy! I'd have to stand in line anyhow to get confirmation of acceptance because they do not always scan the packages when received (like the situation you describe). I really don't mind the extra time I spend (I come prepared with things to occupy my time!!!). I get peace of mind knowing that if they lose a package, I'm covered because I have proof that the package left my hand and went into theirs!!! ONLY 1 PACKAGE SINCE 2007 GOT LOST, and it was due to a RETURN!!!! I accidently got 2 customers mixed up, and sent the package to an address that was no longer valid (my bad... and I only knew about my sending to the wrong customer when that customer contacted me that he did not order the lead. And this customer had moved from one state to another). The time expired for forwarding, so (according to the tracking), the package was going to be returned to me. NOT. It never made it back to me.... and this was about 2 years ago!!! At that time, insurance was extra.... and the customer did not opt for insurance. Because I sent the lead to the wrong person, I shipped another package out... this time to the correct customer!!!!! Maybe someday that package will make its way back to me (ho ho ho,,, in a perfect world!!!). Today, all packages are insured up to $50 for free, so it is a win-win situation if a package gets lost. And maybe I should modify this to say: win for customer, win for me, win whoever scoops up the package and casts their own bullets or fishing sinkers!!!!! But I do have to give the USPS their due credit: they do a fantastic job in delivering packages within short period of time (3 days usually tops), and when a package is CORRECTLY ADDRESSED, it does not get lost!

    Katie,

Read your post on the PO line. We have these satellite post offices around town that are in a Major chain hardware stores or other such places. I find when the PO is busy (anytime between 8 and 5) it is better to just drive a little more to get there. You can probably call your postmaster to get the closest satellite PO, if your area has them. Beats the heck out of standing in line.

THANK YOU!!! There is one satellite in the next town over. I went there once, I carried the box of lead to the back of the office for it looked like the postal clerk would have troubled lifting 25 pounds (never mind 53 lbs!). I just have to "hit it right" so as not to have the longggg line!

Wishing you and your family the best in 2015.... and also, thank you for your input!!!! ~ K

Today I recieved two boxes that I ordered last week. This was my first order, my first impression is amazing communication and the lead looks great. I would definitely order more in the future.
