Cleaning your pistol

Ok, I took it upon myself to do some cleaning of my 44 SRH.

I have shot about 500 plus rounds through it and the 2400, that I'm mainly using is sooting up the outside of the cylinder and other stuff.

What is the best cleaner you have that will remove such gunk?

The breakfree I was using wasn't working to well.

I second Treeman's recommendation.

Cleans up a stainless Security Six and S&W 625 very nicely. Lot of rounds loaded with Alliant Bullseye. It's about all I use anymore.

Really, I have Ed's red and Hoppes still works better. Then to get the black rings off, M-Pro 7 and a brass brush will make it like new. I use a suede brush. It cleans the throats to bare metal too with a bronze bore brush.
I must have 20 solvents around here but Hoppes is still the one.

I second the Hoppe's.
Good old #9 works great on handguns and smells better than - well - better than anything except grandma's cinammon rolls and maybe a fired paper shotshell.
I know you can mix up Ed's Red and save a buck or three - and there's better stuff by far for copper fouled rifles - but for handguns and shotguns it's Hoppe's #9 for me.

i clean my stainless steel revolvers with flitz metal polish! with excellent results. it makes them like new with not alot of effort. try it i think you will like it! it also comes in a qt can for economy but its about $40.00, but it will last for many years cleaning revolvers. in estmation over 500+ cleanings

Take the grips off and spray the snoot out of with #9 and let it set for 10-15 minutes, then brass or nylon brush everything you can get to, bore brush chambers and barrell then patch same, now wipe down the outside and oil what you want to and reinstall grips.

If your gun is nickel plated then DO NOT let the #9 stay on any longer than it takes to clean, it will leach under the plating and make it come loose.
After cleaning my nickel guns I spray them with break cleaner to remove the #9.

#9 Hoppe's isn't cheap. I put either WD40 or Mineral Spirits in a spray bottle and spray the gun. If I'm getting more thorough I take the grips off and spray the internals. I do this outside because the next step is spraying the solvent and gook out/off the gun with my air compressor. Then I give it a good wiping down. This is if I've cleaned the bore and cylinders first. Then your favorite lube where it's necessary. That's all to it.

brake cleaner works wonders! Just be sure to re-lube ALL friction points, as the brake cleaner will remove any and all oil. Hoppe's in the bore and frame window as well.
