Looking for advice on a single shot action.

I have the itch to build a 357max on a single shot action. I don’t really care for the aesthetics of the break barrel style single shots out there like the T/Cs or H&Rs, but would prefer to have an exposed hammer.

    Recommendations would be most appreciated.

Winchester 1885 Highwall or Stevens 44 1/2. Many others aren't strong enough, be careful.

    .357Max

    2nd Amend -

    Howdy !

You may wanna do a search of previous postings, looking for .357Mag H & Rs that were converted-over to .357Max.

    My H & R .357Max was an SB2. I DK what model H & R calls their .357Mags ?
I'd have to look @ their website info.

    With regards.

If you don't want a break action, what are you limited too? Maybe a High Wall, Low Wall, Rolling Block?

Low wall, low wall, low wall.

If you want the easy route, I have (not for sale!) a Browning "traditional" low wall in .357 mag. Just bore it out.

just had a 357 bullberry match barrel rechamberd to 357 max and its great. I just picked up a new CVA scout SS in 44 mag told the barrels are made by Bergara from the factory using factory ammo its shooting one hole groups at 50 yards cost OTD $260.00 and they say they are going to make a 357 cal very soon right now it only 44 mag 243 7mm08 35 whalen(wrong spelling)

I'd be leery of a Low Wall, even a new one. The Max runs best at 40,000 psi, and that's too much for a Low Wall with that case head diameter, IMHO. (The .357 Magnum SAAMI limit is only 35,000)

I've got a Max barrel for my Contender, and IMHO that action is also seriously overworked if you load it like the "eggspurts" are telling us to. I only keep it so I can hunt in Ohio with a proper firearm, (i.e. not a scattergun). Most of the time the 'tender wears a Hornet barrel.

How about a Krag? They were commonly converted to single shot varminters before WW2. (I've got two like that.) The Krag can handle the Max with room to spare. It'd be a single shot - I doubt you could make the magazine work.

You can get "sporter" Krags for $300 or less. Many are in excellent condition, some even have real nice wood. Fit and chamber a .35 barrel, modify the extractor, mount a nice Redfield peep rear sight and a ramp front, and go try it out. If it works, machine the magazine off flush, remove the left sideplate, and put it in a "normal" stock. It may even shoot the lights out. Odd-looking as they were, they were an accurate rifle. So much so that the Army had to ban them from Camp Perry so that shooters would use the newfangled .30-06.

Secondamendmentnut you should look into a Falling Block Works action. They are well made actions that are very strong. They resemble a high wall. They are made in several sizes as well. I will try to find contact information for you but it will probably be tonight. There is no web site.

The current style Browning or Winchester Miroku Low Wall will handle it no problem, an old Win will ,too.
They chamber them in 6.5x55 and 22-250 and were chambered in 260Rem.. A Stevens 44 is a no go, 44-1/2 will be OK. Rolling block? May be dicy, Cimarron likely OK. Hoch, Miller or FBW will work ,too.

I think FBW has been out of business for many years. The last actions I recall seeing for sale were a couple of 'K' models around 1980.

How about a rolling block? Uberti makes a 30-30 that I use and it is excellent. i have been thinking about a 357 max on a rolling block. I think that there is a 357 rolling block that could be used as a 357 max platform. I will look around and see what I can find.

Yep, found it. Go to http://www.taylorsfirearmsstore.com/rolling_block.htm

And here is the one I have in 30-30, which I like much more and would consider as my 357 max platform. A barrel from Green Mountain is inexpensive and replacing the barrel on my 30-30 would not be a big problem. http://www.uberti.com/firearms/1871-...er-carbine.php

CPA copy of the 44 1/2 comes to mind, or if you find an orig. they can get it going, great folks to deal with, they can provide a new block (central fire) if needed, extractor, barrels supplied and fitted, wood supplied and fitted.

Another one to consider would be a Martini. Many a .310 Cadet Martini has been converted to .357 mag; why not .357 max?

    Here's one http://www.huntingnut.com/index.php?...article&sid=54

A Martini would be good. I think many of those that have rechambered their Handi-rifles are running them closer to 50K psi. An exposed hammer, you could find an 1885 Browning, in 223(If they made them in that caliber) and have JES rebore/rechamber it to 357max.

I like the Sharps actions ..... Falling block actions.. simple yet sturdy.
As a matter of fact I have one that I'll be selling soon. Its a 45-70 now But can easily be rebarreled. Under $500. Just a thought

Rifle? Browning/winchester lowwall 1997 and on, A friend has one in a 357 Max and its a dandy. It will take the pressure no problem. He rebored his original 357 magnum.
Pistol? M.O.A. out of Wyoming, a falling block that is quite a dandy. Pete
