    Mountain Molds

I can't vouch for the others but I just received a mold from Dan at mountainmolds and it is a beauty! Prices are right for custom work and the turnaround time was fast!

    Seeking information

Newbie to this site and to Boolit casting. Can anyone direct me to the best source for obtaining a mould for .223, 60 grn. or better? Also, what limitations should I be aware of relative to barrel twist?

http://www.neihandtools.com/catalog/index.html has them in a 62 and 72 grain, both are gas check designs. I have not tried any NEI moulds myself, but have been eyeing the 62gr mold when/if my financial situation allows. Hopefully some of the other members have had some experience with these or other 22 moulds like you are looking for and will chime in.

P.S. Email Bernie@oldwestbulletmoulds.com, their site doesn't list moulds available, but I know he has at least one .224 bullet in the weights you are looking for because he sent me pictures of it when I was asking for a 22 Savage High Power mould. His molds are brass and are excellant, he's also a great place to find moulds for odd or obsolete cartridges.

I must say it was a pleasure working with Tom. It took exactly five days from paying for the order until its arrival at my door !
The entire process of design, drawing, and delivery was less than 10 days !

I thought I kinda want to try a brass mold some day.
I went to Tom's website, He has a ton of standard designs.
I seen that one of his standard designs is a 41 WC button nose in 190 gr.
    I thought, WOW ! I like the 41 and I haven't seen a mold in a WC before.
so I placed an order through the Website sunday evening. I was able to specify
what size I wanted the bullet to drop with what alloy (WW @ .412).
I also asked a question in the comments line of the Paypal order form.
Tom responded with the answer about 2 hours later...on a Sunday night, WOW !
This morning...that's 3 1/2 days later...the postman delivered it to my door.
I could never imagine "CUSTOM" service like this via Mail-order (ur Web-order)

Thats a pretty mold. I was going to have them make a .40 mold for me, but the meplate that I wanted was too small. .100, he wont go under .18., oh well.

That's a tooling limitation and goes for most lathe bored custom molds. Mountain Molds has the same exact 0.18" minimum meplat limitation built into his online design program as well and he also lathe bores his molds.

It is my understanding that there is a way around the limitation, namely the use of custom spoon cutter to finish the nose out to a set shape. I've always thought that a ball end milling cutters could be used as the final stage boring tool on the lathe just chucked in center like one would do with a drill bit to finish molds off with a ball end nose instead of a flat meplat if so desired and just always use a ball end size just a little bit bigger than a flat meplat would be and calculate the depth of cut for a clean tangential junction between the nose curve or taper but I am not a machinist myself and that may not work for some reason that I am not aware of. I tried doing this myself with just a drill press on a junk Lee mold to test the theory and one cavity it worked great on and the other I got the ball cutter just a little bit off center and boogered it up; I think that was mainly a limitation of the crude equipment I was using though.

I am not a machinist or a draftsman, but wouldn't the problem be solved by using a nose pour design?

Here is a drawing of the boolet I would like to produce, I don't have all the numbers on it because I simply don't know how to do that. If anyone knows of a mold maker that can pull this off, I would appreciate it. If someone is bored, and knows how to fill in those missing dimensions, it would be greatly appreciated.

In a gray toolbar at the top of each page you will see among other things "Members List". click that and you will get a place to look at all of the members. On the right side at the top of that page is a search feature.

I didn't see this one in any of this thread's former posts, unless it is a Lee Precision outfit covered under some other linkage...
If it was easy, anybody could do it.

RanchDog is an old member here. He is an upstanding guy. He gets his molds custom made by Lee and verifies them before offering them to the public.
