    Crimped primer problems

I've been getting my 223 brass prepped for loading and have a lot of crimped primer brass where the bottom of the primer tears away from the sides. Most have been winchester. I've not had this problem before. Is it a conspiracy to make my life miserable? Does anyone else have this problem?

Yep, BTDT, only with me it was Remington produced (RA) 7.62x51. Frustrating, huh?

I've dealt with crimped primers, this is the first batch that would rather come apart than slide past the crimp.

Funny just how little corrosion it takes to stick the sidewall of a primer to the case, isn't it?

Soak them overnight with just about any penetrating oil, last time I used PB Blaster, and they will come out just fine.

Of course then you need to run them through the tumbler to get rid of all that nasty oil....

This happens to me with brass that is wet tumbled with the primer in place. I assume that it’s caused by corrosion. This is why I prefer to buy unprocessed brass.

I had this problem until I bought an RCBS primer swager.

I hadn't thought of corrosion, I automatically assumed it was the crimp. These were wet tumbled before de-capping. Something I'll avoid in the future.

Yep. You should always deprime before wet tumbling. You'll also get cleaned primer pockets that way if you do.

Very rarely I get one of those, not often to worry about.

Primers , crimped or regular , in brass that has been exposed to moisture , like range pick ups left in the grass exposed to dew or rain , will sometimes do this . The primer cup sides get just enough corrosion to "stick" them , the cup bottom punches out or through but leaves the sides stuck in the pocket . I worry them out carefully with a small screwdriver.

If you wet tumble be sure to deprime before putting them in , the moisture will get them quickly .
And be sure to completely dry the pockets before priming ... any moisture left in the pocket will give you fits come depriming time.
