What about a tight crimp vs a moderate crimp, resized brass vs non-resized.....enough to prevent telescoping.

My goal is for case capacity loads, i.e. 1,200fps (240gr bullets) to 1,300fps (210gr bullets) to 1,600fps (200gr bullets) for reasons it would take forever to explain. My purpose is not to create 44 magnum powerhouse loads or I would just get a 44 magnum.

Definitely not a power user, but it has proven well worth the money for me.

    FELT RECOIL COMPARISONS...

I’m trying to compare recoil of different loads in the same handgun…

I just snipped a page from QL to post here…

My question: Which numbers do I use to get a good comparison of felt recoil with this handgun, but different powder charges?...

    Thanks…BCB

Peak Force of Gun Recoil should change with each change of the powder charge.

Just checked that and you are indeed correct...

Now, I guess I will enter a load I shoot frequently in my 357 Magnum and compare it to the 9mm load shown in the "snip" I included and that might let me get some kind of understanding as to how much the recoil might be with the 9mm compared to the 357 Magnum...

    Thanks...BCB

I'd like to buy this software primarily for heavy cast loads in the 50 Beowulf. What I've read in this thread makes me a little worried about straight walled cases.
    I'm mostly worried about safety.

Has anyone experienced pressures or problems related to pressure that seem to be higher than what Quickload indicated for a given load?

Also, is the 50 Beowulf one of the cartridges in Quickload?

Unless you have pressure testing equipment there is no way to know if the predictions were wrong. You can compare velocities and that's it. I've had plenty of Quickload predictions that were wrong w/ straight walled cases. But that's why you start low and work up a load. It's an invaluable tool and not something I would want to be w/out.

    I agree...

I start low as is always recommended and chronograph the load. I see what QL predicts for it and then I adjust the powder burn rate so as to get the velocity the chronograph indicated. This then allows for a different calculation and the psi changes also...

I don't know if this is an accepted way of using QL, but it has worked for me so far...

I use IMR-7383 (not a listed powder on QL) powder I got from one of the surplus suppliers on the Net. It says to use IMR-4064 data. So, I started with a very light load from data for 4064. I chronographed it and then adjusted the burn rate of IMR-4064 to equal the velocity I got with x grains of IMR-7383. I then saved it as such and when I open that file, it shows a "?" after the powder indicated the burn rate has been changed. I then might try a heavier or lighter charge and allow QL to predict with the adjusted burn rate...

    That has worked for me...

One of the Pros can step in and indicate if they think this might be O.K. to do this. So far I have had absolutely no problems...

    Good-luck...BCB

I love Quickload, but it does not work for me when trying to load for the 6.5 Arisaka. All I get is an error telling me that a .264 bullet is 1.14% over bore diameter (0.261). If anything, 6.5 Japs have larger bores, not smaller. My rifle has a .269" bore. It doesn't make any sense to me.

I just got Quickload an hour or so ago and have been comparing results with known data for the 500 S&W Magnum. It's pretty good and I can see how to tweak it to make it better.

I can start with a bullet in the database, like the 500 gr. Hornady, and then change the specs to 510 gr, different bullet length, different OAL to reflect my design, and rename the bullet ".500, 510gr Ross Sledgehammer," I can plug in my data I developed and the QL results are close.

What I haven't figured out is how to save this bullet data to the database so that I can recall it next time. I've read through the PDF of the manual and I'm still doing something wrong.

    Any help?

    Quickload thread

There's a row of icons at the top. The fifth one from the left allows you to edit bullet data. It brings up a window when clicked. One of the options at the bottom is to "Add New". It will save it to whatever name you type in at the top.

I have mine separated by mold manufacturer. You're not putting that much information in for the bullets so once a bullet file, actually a folder, has been created and loaded. Bring up the bullet data window, change name, enter data and select "Add New". You can enter a lot of bullets quickly this way.

I hope that's not confusing. I don't have time to use the snipping tool to show a step by step w/ pictures.

Thanks for the help! Made a folder with all .500" bullets and then added all of mine.

I LOVE this program. It now appears I need to get some Accurate 5744. I think this powder may replace my dwindling supply of 4759 for lighter and mid-power loads in the .500.

You are quite right about the Arisaka bores: I guess this is another one of QuickLoad's funny little quirks. Just hit the "OK" button in the pop-up and it will calculate just fine for you. QL predictions seem to be reasonably close for my Arisaka when I do this...

Definitely considering getting this. Grew up doing everything analog (Didn't have a home PC in the 60s) - More info can be good though.

It would be rather nice if the web site didn't use flashing icons (mumble!)

It would also be rather nice if the web site had a list of what powders, cartridges, etc. were supported on QuickLoad. Can anyone tell me how much hard drive space the software requires to load & run? (I have a tiny netbook with a tiny solid state drive, wondering if it's large enough for a range computer or if I need a 'spinning rust' hard drive. Probably will have to go to an 11" or so laptop not the 9" micro one.) I'll come up with more questions maybe but figuring which machine to put it on's first

It's easier to list the powders NOT supported (yet.) 4759 and CFE BLK come to mind,as well as obsolete powders like BLC-1, H375, H570, T570 (30mm cannon powder), 295HP, etc.

Cartridges from EIGHT different .14 calibers to five different 20mm cannon rounds and everything in between, including the 11mm Vickers Balloon Gun I used to own.

The QL section of my SS drive is showing 36 megs so far.
