BLC(1) I haven't used, BLC(2) yes; Most a;; supported is good. No 20mm cannon, maybe some day :P Thanks for the info! 36 megs isn't bad, 32GB SSD it'd fit on.

    HELP!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled QL five times while learning how it works. I added a bunch of bullets successfully a few days ago. I went to add another bullet just now and must've hit the wrong key because I seem to have deleted every bullet of every caliber in the database except THREE bullets (that I never use.)

Is there any way to go back, without starting all over?

    I feel like an idiot...

EDIT: Never mind. I don't know what I did, but apparently I didn't delete anything...

    Hello

My buddy picked up QL a few weeks back and we've been playing with it a little and loving the program.
I'm working my way through this thread slowly but figured I would just post the question anyway.
Is there a way to add a custom bullet profile into quick loads using just dimensions? Or do I have to pickup the cast bullet design software?
If it's the route of the CB design will the basic version still export to QL?
I basically took a 457 postell mould and placed a gas check in the front driving band, casting a 250ish grain wadcutter that I wanted to work some numbers on. I was hoping I could edit that bullet file and save a new copy as a wadcutter.

Also I've read a little about people adding powder profiles but not much info on how it's done. I was hoping to play with CFE BLK but no clue when they will add that power to the list. Does anyone have profile for that or have info on how to edit a profile for it? (or is it even worth it due to too many factors and I could kaboom my rifle, so just be patient?)

    Thanks for the help!

When I looked at programmes a couple of years ago there was nothing else in the QL league.

There are some free, good basic ballistic software out there.

Yes. I didn't see "postell" as a choice in the listings of bullet databases, but no matter. Find any .457" cast bullet in the existing QL database (Lyman would be a good place) and pull it up. Now hit the 5th icon from the left at the top of the page, and a pop-up box will appear where the description of the bullet will be highlighted in blue. Leave the .457 that the description starts with, and edit the rest as you see fit, such as "250 gr Postell custom WC."

Now go to the "Projectile O.A. length" and "Projectile weight" boxes and fill them in with the proper figures. Hit "add new" at the bottom right of the pop-up box, then "cancel and exit" at the bottom left, and you're done.

Thanks man! Glad to see you back around the forum. I was following a few threads and wish you would finish the biography at some point. Very interesting.
So adjusting like that will cut down the length of the bullet top down or just shrink the bullet down to that length? Is there a way to see drawings of the bullets prior to or once adjusted?
Sorry for being a noob. My buddy has the program so I don’t have a chance to mess with it at the drop of a hat. I have a MAC so using it at home is a no go.

It won't draw the bullet. It doesn't know what shape it is, only the weight, diameter, and length. Those are all that is needed for QL to work. (Boattail bullets need more info, but that's not relevant in this case.)

Ok I figured it would take into play bearing surface and driving bands etc.
I’ll run some numbers tonight if I get a chance.
    Thanks again!

Not sure it qualifies as a nightmare, but after a few days of playing with QL, I came across this anomoly where QL seems to be grossly inaccurate, albeit in a conservative direction.

Hodgdons Loading data page lists 40 to 50 grains of Varget behind a cast 405 grain bullet as suitable for 45-70 Trapdoors.

Try 50 grains of Varget in QL and it is compressed and exceeds SAAMI limits. I don’t have my brass yet for my newly acquired Trapdoor to see if a 45-70 case will hold 50 grains of Varget without compression, but hard to believe Hodgdon would make such a mistake.

Any ideas, or is this something that just happens now and then with QL?

    Jeff

What bullet and what seating depth?
I found with a Lee 405 iirc that 50 grains of varget was a crompressed load.
I remember thinking there was not way to fit a “max” load of varget in the case.

The bullet is Lee 90374. 457-405-F. It is in the QL database. If you use QL default data for bullet length (1.020), case max capacity (79 grains water) and Hodgdon's recommended cartridge OAL (2.540), with 50 grains Varget the pressure comes to 28787 psi (28000 listed as max) and 102.1% filling (compressed). Even with QL's 2.550 OAL, the pressure exceeds 28000 psi.

If you use Lee's actual published dimensions for that bullet of 1.040 QL pressure is 29766 psi and fill is 103.7%. If you use 72.5 grains case water capacity which I found in Ammoguide, pressure goes to 40768 psi and 117.8% fill! I don't have my brass yet so I can't say what actual capacity is. Maybe some 45-70 shooters can chime in.

Hodgdon lists this load as safe for Trapdoors with a pressure of 20900 CUP.

Even with the CUP/PSI difference I won't be using this load, but something is wrong with either Hodgdon's data or QL. I know there is a caution about QL data and straight walled cases but this is a significant discrepancy that without a clear explanation will cause me to lose faith in my newly acquired QL.

    Just an FYI!

Hodgdon replied to my inquiry about 50 grains of Varget in a 45/70 Trapdoor. They responded that the “Trapdoor” loads listed in their reloading data are for “modern Trapdoor replicas”, not BP US Springfield Trapdoors. The “Modern” label on their third 45/70 category led me to believe the “Trapdoor” category, with significantly lower loads and pressures, were for the real Trapdoors. Guess not.

I really wish Quickload would add 6mm Creedmore to the list of cartridges

You can add cartridges yourself. Quickload includes a nice manual that tells a lot about how the program works.

    Question Moving Bullet Data...

I created an N.I.E. file to store the .313-95-HEEL boolit in. I did the measurements and saved it but it went to the Lyman file—I guess it was the file that was open on the home page of the QL program…

How might I get that N.E.I. boolit to be in the N.E.I. file and not the Lyman bullet file?...

    Thanks…BCB

To move a bullet from one data file to another you can grab the line you want and add it to the proper file by navigating to your documents if that is where your QL data files are.

    Mine are located at C:\Users\Public\Documents\QuickLOAD\data\bullets

Just make sure you use a plain text editor to edit them. Also might be wise to copy the original files in case you corrupt the originals doing the edits.

I'll have to think about this one!!! Not being overly computer savvy, this could end up a disaster...

Notepad is one example of a plain text editor, if you don't have that we can suggest others

  20. #460
    I just pulled that off....what a rush!

I created my own file, opened that file in notepad
Opened other files in a separate notepad and copied what individual bullet data I needed and pasted it into the "my bullets" notepad.
What this did was allow me access to all the bullets I use in one file rather than have to open 15 different files. So far so good. I just wish I could sort them by name rather than by caliber.

    Attachment 217105

If anyone sees any errors I missed, please let me know!!! This is a pretty big learning curve for me. I noticed a few bullets don't have a length in the data as well as a few bullets that don't belong like the FTX bullets. I can change that!!!
