    Hi,

New to this forum but have had QL v.3.9 for about a year now, trying to get thru the learning curve. I read the manual completely and decided I would you it for 'reference' along with reloading manuals until I got thru the steep learning curve. My initial intent was primarily for rifle loads but I load for 2 pistols, as well. Many things I questioned when reading the manual have become clearer as I've perused QL and additional questions have been answered reading thru this thread. I am going to try and get out of QL all that it can offer.

I load 204 Ruger Match, 204 AI, (2) 20x47 Lapua, 22 CM and 243AI chambers and with different barrel lengths. I read that twist rate could be factored in under 'Gun Data' but am unsure how this figures into 'Cartridge Dimensions' input box? I want to be to keep my different lots/ headstamps of brass per chamber separated based on 'Max Case Capacity' and believe I have this figured out. My intent is to alter and save 'Propellants' with temps higher than the default 70 degrees in my propellants file(s) based on avg. temps in my area for when loads will be ran. I have bullets which are not 'manufacturer' built and believe I have the process of inputting them understood. My final tweak for input will be for 'Friction Proof', as I HBN coat all bullets.

I will read the manual again now that I have 'played' the program. My intention is to uninstall and reinstall QL, as my altered 'input data fields' in my loaded version have been saved. I now understand I need to save these changes in a specific way to preserve the default numbers QL came with, for future use in a paricular cartridge/bullet configuration.

Any input in my areas of concern would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Dale

Good luck! I'm still learning about QL and consider myself a newb with the program. That said, here are my suggestions:

    1. I wouldn't waste any time changing twist rates in "gun data." Years ago I spent the better part of an afternoon calculating how much more energy would be required to spin a 500 grain .458 bullet at 2700 FPS in a 10" twist vs. a 20" twist. I spent so much time on it because I kept doing the math over and over because the difference was tiny, suggesting you would gain something like three FPS using the slower twist at the same pressure. I had a college Calculus professor check my work and he said the math was right.

CAVEAT: There may be some other good reason (of which I'm not aware) for inputting different twist rates into QL, such as barrel harmonics. I warned you I'm a newb...

    2. Temp inputs on powder--Is this really a good idea? I would think that different ambient temperatures would have a much smaller effect on powder temperature than other factors, such as is the gun a bolt or semiauto, how many shots have been fired through it in how many minutes, and how long did you let the loaded round sit in the chamber before pulling the trigger...

    Once again, good luck!

Rather than reload the whole thing for factory default levels I just create another cartridge for my use. My personal rifles are quite a bit of on case capacities etc. so I just customize a file and call it something like .223 Manufacturer A. Saves a lot time and with my wildcatted versions they are very handy.

Thanks, John. I apologize for not responding sooner but had not seen any activity for over a month and kind of gave up. I do appreciate your input on the bbl twist and powder temp inputs. I will further look into the output difference for powder temps and go on from there.

Greg, I have already started from ground zero. Beginning to input specifics for each rifle, batch of brass, etc. is I collect the input materials necessary for how I'd like to use QL. I appreciate your input. My major concerns are getting the correct info input regarding the 20x47's - getting the bore diameter initial settings correct to move forward. I haven't had much time lately to look at this thoroughly but will do soon.

    I appreciate your response!

The list I posted above is for 3.8. I need to update to 3.9. But as usual there’s no information about what’s been added.

Well I may have complained about this before. But I just ordered the latest update as I had an early version of data from 3.9. They charge $11.83 to ship the CD, which is only going to be in a paper sleeve. The update costs $15.99. I also happened to order 17 albums (CDs), all will be in jewel cases, and the shipping was $6.95. This was from a small independent label so they take care of the shipping themselves. I really wish QL would allow downloads as it would be better for everyone. As it is most computers don’t come w/ optical drives anymore.

Do you have a list of new powder profiles added? Hoping for CFE BLK

This is why I've NEVER updated my ver. 3.9. I've talked to the distributor on the phone and explained that he is way behind in customer support expectations in this age of JIT ("Just In Time") electronic delivery of software. This sort of update should be available for download and, even if snail mail is used, far cheaper shipping methods are available. The retailer/distributor is either using the shipping and "handling" charge as a "profit center" or is not delivering product intelligently and economically. Almost $30 is far too much to ask for an update, given the dearth of new product (powders, projectiles, etc.) support added--even since ver. 3.9.

The lack of a list of currently supported products is also indicative of a lack of dealer/distributor and perhaps even factory/software publisher support (if crippled by factory/distributor contract) for this software, in general. It's like pulling teeth to find out what's in the newest version. You have to phone the retailer/distributor and ask on a "one-by-one" basis whether any given reloading consumable or new cartridge is included in the update. It's like pulling teeth and a customer should not have to do it!

I guess I'm ranting too, but I think if enough customers were to phone the retailer/distributor and complain, maybe their business practices would change. Until they change, I'm unlikely to update or even buy additional products.

You can buy USB external CD / DVD reader/writer drives easily enough online, when needed.

Received the update today. And boy do they like to waste money. They shipped the CD is a SFRB. I used to trade live shows through the mail which consisted shipping CDs in padded mailers all over the world. Never had an issue and it's a lot less money. But they made money off the shipping charges.

Here is the list of current powders. 12 have been added since 3.8/early 3.9. The list is current as of 2018-01-06.

I suspect part of the difficulty with keeping up with new powders in the tremendous number of new powders introduced in recent years.

Another problem is the time and expense of testing new powders. Some powder manufacturers will not supply the necessary data to QL so they only way to get it is to privately test it. QL comes from Germany and many powders on it get only regional marketing. They may be available in North America, Europe, Commonwealth, etc. but not everywhere. I found several powders on QL that seem ideal for my use but they are not available in USA. I can not blame QL for that.

I recently got a laptop and I was wondering if I can install my copy of QL on it as I already have it installed on my PC...

Will it install on 2 computers?...

    Thanks...BCB

It should work fine. I've had QL for years and I've gone through several computers (desktops and laptops). It always installs just fine and then I copy all my custom files (loads, bullets, wildcat cartridge definitions, etc.) and they work fine too.

I no longer have a Windows machine so I run QL in WINE under a Linux OS, which also works fine, after sometimes having to tweak the WINE environment (fonts, for instance). Of course WINE is not a supported environment and the installation is not quite "turn-key" like it is under actual Windows, but it works for me. Hopefully future releases of QL will work the same, because I have no intention of ever running Windows again! Just an FYI for any other Linux users.
