Anyone done a nice 44 cal RNFP goup buy?

Has there ever been a group buy for a 240-250 gr. RNFP 44 cal mould similiar to this one in 45?

    http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=109753

I would really like to have a nice single lube groove RNFP with a decent/reasonable meplat (maybe .300 or so). Has anyone done this yet?

I have a Lyman 429667 4-cav mould, but that design didn't quite make pefection. The bottow half is close but it should have been a true flat-base. THe front half should have had a slightly shorter and little wide nose.

    Thanks,

NOE did one last year for a 265 RNFP which was a conventional lube groove version of Ranch Dog's.

That nose profile looks great. If it was a single lube groove, plain flat-base, and close to 250 grs. it would be exactly what I would like to see.

This would be the perfect all around bullet for owners of 44 Special or Mag sixguns and companion leverguns. The Keiths are the standard for the sixguns they just never feed well in rifles for me like a RNFP does.

    Thanks,

I would be interested if it dropped at 225 to 250 grs and at least .434 dia plain base. It would have to be the right OAL to feed through a Marlin 94.

does the 429667 by Lyman work for you?

I'd be up for that boolit! Here's a pic of it

What's the weight on that Lyman 429667? It's not listed in any of my catalogues...current or old.

Listed as 240 grains in a chart in Midsouth's catalog. My mould confirms this with my boolet alloy and throws them at a generous .431 diameter.

The 429667 I have drops at 253 grs with straight WW alloy. The two problems I have with it are the slight rounding of the base and mine barely manages .430" as cast. A true flatbase would be much better and I would prefer .432-.434" as-cast diameter too.

The nose to crimp length on the 429667 is .360" with a .277-.280" diameter meplat. The weight is fine but I would prefer to shorten the nose slightly and increase the meplat to something like .300".

So to summarize, I think the 429667 could be the starting point and with a few minor mods be perfect. Here is what I would change:

    1. Change the rounded base to a true flat base design
    2. Increase the as-cast diameter to .433-.434"
    3. Keep the approximate 250 grs. weight
    4. Reduce the nose length slightly to maybe .340"
    5. Increase the meplat to .300" or so

I think that would be just about perfect!!!

I like Mark in GA ideas. I think that would make a great boolit for the Marlins and the handguns.....Terry

This boolit would interest me as well, for use in my EMF model 92 in 44 mag. The Ranchdog boolit with standard grease grooves looks like another good one.

I'd be interested in something like this even though I would prefer a 230-240 grain weight. Single lube groove. I'm not interested in a gas check. I like the big meplat and the OAL this would give.

I agree that the 429667 by Lyman is not quite what I am looking for.

Hey Blammer since you said you are working on a drawing, have you seen the recent additions to this discussion and mods that have been proposed?

One other bullet that I have always liked is the Lee 358-158-RF. If they would drop the slight bevel-base and go with a true flat-base it would be perfect. Something in 44 cal like it would be nice. I wonder why Lee have never done one. Maybe "We" need to correct that.

Like Mauser Rat says, I like the single lube groove too.

    Thanks

What style blocks would you want to go for? What material? How many cavities? 4or 6?

4 cavity would be ideal for me. I shoot a lot of 44 Mag but a 4 banger can make a load of boolits in a short time.

I would be interested if it matched the proportions in Mark's post #1 !

If Al at NOE were to do it just take his two drawings (PB & GC) and scale them to a bullet with 0.433ish". I like that design !
In fact I ordered two of them !

I think that is the link Mark posted as well? So we are all tending in the same direction? For a 44 version of that 45, I would want to see a proportionally longer nose. I think Mark had mentioned about .340" or so which sounded good to me. We need to check the OAL with the Marlin guys but that would shoot well out of my RH. Keep the wide meplat and I guess I could be arm twisted into a 250 grain weight but I'll need to go scrounging for lead again.

Ok guys, I'm no draftsman or engineer, but I toyed around the design program over at Mountain Molds and this is what I came up with for a rough sketch using my ideas.

This is .432"-.434" as cast diameter, .340" nose-to-crimp length, a 70% meplat (.302" diameter), single lube groove, flat base, 250 gr w/ WW alloy.

    What do you think?
