Pulldown 4198 in .243

I have a bunch of pulldown 4198. I use it as IMR4198. A friend bought me dies and brass for me to load for his .243. The jacketed HP bullets he brought me were Sierra 85gr BTHP. My Lee manual had date for 100gr at 27.3 to 31gr. I used this data and referenced several others that had listings for both wieghts to make an educated guess and tried 30 and 32 gr loads. Today, just for fun, I opened the Speer Reloading Manual Vol. 11 printed in 1987. They also did not have data for IMR 4198 for the 85gr, but they did for the 90gr. 17 to 19gr! I was stunned. The load data for the 100gr didn't list it, but for 105gr it listed IMR4198 at 18 to 20gr. Lee has 100gr at 27.3 to 31gr, though. What gives? I had tried to find load data from Sierra, but no luck. Can someone put my mind at ease here? I already gave my friend 20 of each load yesterday. Do I need to be calling him telling him not to shoot them?

My Speer #13 lists it as a reduced load at 17 to 19 grains giving 1796 to 2005 fps. This is for a 85 gr SPBT bullet.

Ahh, so thats what Red Load means (I feel dumb now...)! I feel better already. Long as the post is up, anyone used this powder in this caliber before? Any load info? My friend is looking to get 100gr HP for hunting, just currently not available. The 85gr was all he could get right now. So, any load info on the 85gr or 100gr would be most appreciated.

I'd save it for use with real cast Boolits. 243 likes slower powders to make it do it's magic.

If you want to see those 85 grhpbt's shine, load them over IMR 4350 and rem primer. Target load was 38 gr of IMR 4350, hunting load was at or near max in book, for every 243 I ever shot.

I remember 4350 and 4831 in the 6 mm Rem. Haven't fired it in years. Too busy playing with .30 cal cast. Any cast shooters in 6 mm Rem?? Any mold suggestions??

Well, I do have a little H4831 and IMR4831. Close to a lb of each. Other than that, I don't have much choice. Powder around here is hard to come by. I laid in an 8 of 4198 and an 8 of Red Dot. Best I have been able to do lately.

My Lee book gives H4831 48gr (compressed) as the start and max for 85gr. No listing for IMR in the 85gr. For 100gr, it lists both. H at 39-42gr and IMR at 36.6 to 39.5gr. Could I assume that 44.3gr of IMR would work for the 85gr (same % reduction as the 100gr load)?

IMHO , yes you can . As long as you follow the % of reduction. I have done this in the 243, 25/06 and 300/338 mags. It works for me and if you go to a powder burn rate chart it will show the IMR getting to max pressure in the 3-4 gr. range ahead of the H4831 as it is a faster powder. All things are relevant, boolit weight, case capacity, primer, powder as you know.

If the guys that make these manuals tried to include every load for every boolit out there , they would weigh 10#, so we improvise and adapt, if your nervous, deduct another 10% from the IMR and work up or load a couple and try them, you would do that anyway if looking for the accuracy loading.
