    Lyman 225107 Mold

I'm looking for a 225107 Lyman 22 mold... these are rare nowadays. It would also be great if someone could send me some bullets who has this mold... not many; 10-15 bullets would be enough to make a drawing from.

    Thanks,

    Boomer

I just read Beagle's article about the 225107 on castpics and a solution for making the 107's.

"If you have to have one, the meplat measures .125”. Standing a Lyman #225415 alongside a #225107 shows where Lyman got the design. They ‘bobbed” the spire point off the #225415 at an appropriate place to obtain around 40.0 grains and marketed it.

Based on that theory, it would be very easy for a good machinist to center a cavity and drill the nose on through using a .125” drill bit. Then, he’d come back in and ream the .125” hole to the meplat diameter. Then a brass pin could be turned the exact diameter of the meplat and fitted and pinned into one side of the mould. It would take some close fitting but would be easy for a machinist. This would then turn out a bullet that would be very close to a #225107. Let’s say, a poor man’s #225107."

    Thanks John,

How many variations of the 225107 mold are (were) there?

Looking at the reference here http://www.three-peaks.net/bullet_molds.htm the "boobed 225415" does not look the same.

    Curious!

I have a 225462 coming my way, and am still looking for a lighter bullet, more suitable for a Hornet.

    Cheers

    Boomer Mickey,
I could spare a couple of 225107's since I don't have many left. They are definitely different than the 225415 shortened. The ones I do have were sent to me by a distant friend several years ago. According to the pic, the NEI 224 -39 gc is a duplication of the 225107 profile according the bullets I have.

    trevj,
Lyman's 225438 is an ideal 45 gr. bullet as is the NEI 45 gr. shown below. I have both molds and both bullets shoot very well from my Hornet.

The 225107 that I have definitely has a more blunt nose than the first NEI pictured. Now, Crazy Mark has one that closely resembles that one in design so there are definitely several variations.

There are many different 225438 variations as I have seen some that ran an almost round nose and some with almost a spire point...and some in between.

I'd like to run into another 225107 but they are scarce.......

I got mine kinda by mistake. I had a trade going for a 225438 with a guy and he wrote and said he couldn't find the 225438 and would a 225107 be all right. Yes sir, three bags full!!!./beagle

I have the NEI #2. With gas check and lube cast in ww it will run about 48gn.
It is an absolutely wonderful design for hornet rifles, even the older slow 1/16" twist barrels.
Its prolly my most favorite 22 mold of all my 22's. Walt made it for me and I cherish the mold. A six cavity of absolutely exquisite workmanship.

I picked up the remnants of a fellows estate from his son at a gunshow a couple weekends back.

Apparently he had sold the six molds that he had, for $10 each that morning, all to the same fellow. There's a surprise!

I got some 225438's, a bunch of 225515's, with assorted lubes, about 300 225450's as cast, and a box containing an assortment of hollow pointed slugs that look like a 225415, and a couple longer round nosed ones, maybe 225096's.

All idents are strictly on the 'as far as I can tell' plan, but they seem to match up pretty well with what I see around the site here, and elsewhere.

    Wish I'd got there earlier!

I put the word out that I was looking for 22 molds on a Canadian site, and got an offer of the 225462. I suspect it'll be a bit heavy for the Hornet, but should work OK in the .223. Still got the feelers out, though. Figure I'll get at the least, a 225438. If I can hook up with a 225415, so much the better.

A 225107? If I get two, I might be in touch! If I find one at all, I'll be pretty pleased!

    Cheers

    I have two Hornet's; a Ruger 77SS Target with a 1:14 twist and a 10" TC Contender SS barrel with 1:12 twist.

At Beagle's suggestion in his excellent CastPics articles, I've gathered the Lyman 225438, Lyman 225415, and RCBS 22-55-SP molds. The TC barrel seems to like 55 grain Jword bullets fine so I might get by fine with them. I really don't need more weight for Hunter's Pistol matches using the Contender.

I've been daydreaming about making a "D" bit or "Dutchman" reamer and attempting to make a mold... something I've never done before but I'm interested in trying. I have a double acting vise, lathe, indexer and mill... maybe - and the reason for wanting some samples.

Thanks for all the interest, 22's are fun and inexpensive.

Anyone got photo's of an actual commercially made cherry?

I'd be pretty interested in seeing what they look like.

    Silver bullets!

Wasn't there an article on shooting silver bullets a while back, in Guns and Ammo, or one of them?

That mold looks like EDM graphite or similar, rather than Iron.

Nice easy to turn up cherry idea, though!
    Thanks!

I should see what I can come up with... I probably want one of those self centering vises.... Maybe....

I'd be in for a mold if you are gonna make some!

    No way!

As most of you know Lee doesn't make custom 22 molds and I'm not a mold maker or even a machinist... I'm a hobbyist... I dabble in machine technology with some cheap Chinese machine tools.

The Dutchman reamer may be fine for making a few molds and I'm going to do mine in aluminum so the mold reamer may last long enough for those; however, I have no intentions of making molds for sale. This is strictly a learning/hobby project.

My hands are full waiting for molds from Lee for 7 buys. Maybe Old West could make some but I'm not interested in running a buy at this time.

    Have fun,

    Boomer

Whats happenjing with Mihec lately/ Wish that man could go into full time business!

Last I heard he was trying to set up a bank account. Bet he could make us some fine moulds. The only problem is that the various groups here can not decide on a design. The crazy thing is that most 224 bullets are so close to the same profile because of size and weight!. That Lee Bator would be great or the RCBS. I would just like to get a mould for under the cast iron prices.

I've got 2-225107's. One is a HP and the other is a DC. They are slightly different in overall length. They can be a pain to cast and it's hard keeping the mould hot enough. As I have only 2-.222's I don't shoot a lot of these. I have used them in sabots with my 30/30 and 7.62 nato's with differing results. Mark
