Anyone loading for the new 3" 28 gau hulls ?


I had the chambers of a SKB 585 that I hunt with lengthened

I am planning on using it for both upland and some duck hunting

But I am mainly going to start using it for doves

Eddie, was wondering the same thing. Why fool with perfection. But I thought the same thing about the 3 1/2” 12 ga.

Longer shot column= blown patterns. Same mistake as the 3" 20 Gauge. If you want more payload, go up a gauge.

I understand the principle and the need to go up a gauge but there is an elegance about a true 28 ga. frame that can only be had with a 28 ga. I'd say pattern it. give it a try.

It's fun to have options. I'd rather have them than not. My 28-gauge CZ Bobwhite G2 has three-inch chambers, but all I am currently using it for is skeet, so no need.
As far as the three-inch 20 gauge, many years ago I hunted chukars in the steep and rugged basalt breaks of the Malheur River canyon in eastern Oregon. My shotgun was a light, wonderfully balanced Citori 20 gauge, 26-inch barrels, bored improved cylinder and modified. I ran Remington Express 3-inch magnums, 1 1/4 ounces of No. 7 1/2 if I recall correctly -- might have been 1 1/8. They were the perfect choice for me anyway and I killed a lot of chukars with that gun and load. Would I have killed as many birds with 7/8 ounce in a 2 3/4-inch shell? I don't know.

2 3/4inch 7.5's are dove slayers in my 28 but the steel in that length is a tad enemic. I use the 3inch Federal #3's in steel and they really work well on ducks. I don't load steel but do load for the doves.

Why ?

For a smaller frame gun that's easier to carry all day. Let us see how it shoots John.

Sounds like a great excuse to buy a 28 gauge for my wife.

The thing I most love about 28 ga is modest recoil. Overall they are light guns so the added recoil from 3” loads is gonna wake you up in a bad way.

I guess there is a need of some people to pay more for ammo. .410 and 28 ga. shells are twice what 12 and 20 ga. are. Sounds like another solution looking for a problem.

I don't know about 28 gauge, but as popular as the .410 is anymore I would think the price should be coming down.
Of course, in reality I don't think the price of any ammo is going to come down much, only go up.

I bought the loader and components before I bought the gun. It’s a great loading gauge, easy to turn out perfect shells.
