    The Ferguson build

This is a Rifle Shop kit that is one of the most rare BP rifles out there. The kit comes with a finished barrel and breech screw. Most all the rest of the parts including the brass all come in raw dropped out of the mold condition with pour sprues sticking out. If you ever order one of their kits, spend the extra $100 and have them put the lock together. That way they will fit, finish and harden the springs and related parts. They did nice color case hardening on the frizen and other hardened parts but the rest of the lock will still need to be resurfaced from the sand blasted cast surface. The first pictures shows how I lined up the barrel wedge loops with the drill, then slip the stock on the chucked up barrel so there is an accurate guide hole drilled in the wood for the 3 barrel wedge holes. Im not a big wood work guy but I struck up a friendship with the guy I bought my home from and agreed to build this gun for him. I installed a TC touch hole liner for practical reasons. He takes the gun to Colonial War gatherings where he demonstrates its shooting abilities.

That gun should have been impossible for a mortal to design and build in the mid 18th Century and is nearly unimaginable even today. Well done!

“The Ferguson Rifle” was a good fictional story of a young man with one of those Revolutionary War assault rifles…..
I don’t recall the author, though.

One of the most interesting stories of Captain Ferguson was one day he and his men were posted to ambush a road used by the Continentals. As Ferguson was hidden at the lead, he saw an officer with another rider coming down the road. Ferguson readied his breach loader and was impressed by the gallant way the officer rode and watched them stop in the road, a clear and easy shot, he hesitated to fire, not feeling right about "ambushing" an Officer. After a brief pause, the 2 turned and rode off. The Officer was later found to be George Washington. The only story that has been written about the rise and demise of Patric Ferguson's career in the British Army is by a arms collector named Jac Weller who at the time of the article owned one of the rare original Ferguson rifles. It is pictured in his article. That can be found in the "Gun Digest 13th edition of 1959. Only 100 Rifles were ever built for Fergusons special command of 100 British re-trained regulars who would not have been using typical British tactics of engagement under Ferguson's gorilla style of combat. Its not just Ferguson's Rifle that has an interesting history, but the man as well.
Thanks for all the generous comments. Happy to share.
