Mowery cap lock from Olney Tx.

Just purchased a 58 cal cap lock , can anyone give me any pointers . Have never shot a 58 cal before let alone one of these Mowery rifles from Texas.
    Thanks Fitz

It's a round ball gun, so a good start is a .570" ball, good thick patch, and about 80 grains of 2F.

On some of those, the tumbler was not supported on the left side and would fairly quickly wear out the cast receiver. I would take it apart and see how it was made just to be safe. If it's got the double bearing design it will last for years. If not you might want to think about how to make it so. Otherwise great rifles!

I owned one in 45 - great hunting rifle, but mine had a 1-28” twist and was designed for slugs. Sold it to a friend and asked him to sell it back if he got tired of it. He carried it for many years then died suddenly - it disappeared, along with his other guns.

Regardless, you will like it - they shoot especially well offhand.

I have a .50 but always wanted a .40 with the fast twist barrel and schuetzen buttplate.

I have admired these interesting rifles since I first saw them decades ago in the annual Gun Digests. Passed through Olney not long ago. It's not far south of Larry McMurtry's home town of Archer City.

I got one in .40 about a year ago. Nice looking gun, heavy, good shooter. Mine came with a leather stock cover that I removed.

That is a beautiful rifle, mine has the brass forearm to match the reciever.

It was standing in a rack with other rifles, and it jumped out at me. When I shoot BP, I've been using the vegetable spray PAM (or cheaper store version) as a lube. I spray the patches with it, then spray some down the barrel after every shot. It works well for me, but you have to clean the gun thoroughly after.
