I have an original 1860 Army that has a gain twist barrel - are you referring to a rifle or pistol?

This site shows centerfire barrels but I'm sure someone is making ML barrels with G/T.

    why is the question

sounds like a cure for a non existent problem

If you have ran out of things to tinker with = good plan

too many things still need tinkering with at my place .................................

Gain twist was developed to ease the transition of the lead projectile into the rifling and minimize stripping on the short bearing surfaces of a round lead ball. It may have helped in that application, but I agree with Indian Joe that you may not be able to measure any improvements with a patched lead ball or a bare bullet inside a muzzleloading rifle - although it might be fun to try on a breechloader.

Harry Pope experimented with these for years. He said he couldn't see a dimes worth of difference in accuracy.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

I have gain twist in my 1860 Colt and also in my Pietta Shooters Model. Both are superbly accurate guns. Bobby Hoyt says they should also provide higher velocity. I have not verified this since I don’t exceed 25 grains in the original Colt and while I do load the Pietta with 30 grains behind the ball I haven’t chronographed it in a long time.

The S&W 500 for sure and maybe the 460 have a gain twist. They said it is to lessen the torque on your hand so it's easier to hold on to.
